Retail: The Scandanavians Are Coming To Dumbo

We all know that Ikea is to open a Red Hook Brooklyn location sometime this year. But a few other smaller Scandanavian stores are opening in Dumbo this fall.

Tivoli Home, a Scandinavian kitchen, houseware, and home furnishings will open in late September in part of the General Store (Cafe Bar, 111 Front Street) next to Dumbo Hardware store on 115 Front Street.

Also, as first reported by pdhyman.com’s Dumbo Report, a BoConcept store from Denmark with reasonably priced modern furniture and accessories is opening this fall in the space next to West Elm on Front Street.

  • It’s great there are more retailers coming to Dumbo although I wish they would be more diversified in terms of their product. Yes, there is a huge opportunity for furniture/design stores but it would be great to see a local pharmacy (so I don’t have to go to montague) or small hair salon. Of course that’s just my wish list 😉

  • I agree about a drug-store. pdhyman.com’s Dumbo Report said that walentas was trying to land one. Given that we now have about five grocery stores, you woud think that someone might have made a go of it by now.

  • last i checked there was still a “lease out” to a Bigelow-like pharmacy….But nothing is for certain, 100%….I will check back with my source on this

as for the Tivoli store that will share part of the General Store….huh? That’s not much space, really, esp when you consider how much vacant retail space there is around DUMBO

  • Speaking of the general store – i really like it, but I don’t understand the economics of it. How do they manage to pay for such a great space?

  • I read an article somewhere about the pharmacy also, Walentas said it himself in the piece. A pharmacy is totally necessary… but I just hope the prices aren’t insane. If so, screw the she-she apothecary… give me a regular old duane reade or cvs.

  • People, a regular old Duane Reade or CVS would go bankrupt in a minute. There is just not enough foot traffic to sustain such businesses in DUMBO. Most of the local businesses started out (and some still are) heavily subsidized by Two Trees. If not for their notorious rent breaks, you would have half the amenities that you enjoy now.
