85 Adams Street Condo Progress (9/12/06)

Below are two photos of Beacon Tower in Dumbo taken two months apart. They must be hard at work on the interior because it looks like the exterior is mostly done, as the difference between the photos is small (compare J Condo progress in the background). The supposed dented exterior noted by a commenter can be seen in a close-up photo I took below, but it’s a work in progress so we’ll have to see when the building is ready for occupancy in 2007.

  • I hate to say it because I love Dumbo and want to support her evolution, but this building is an eyesore. It looks
like a gigantic air conditioner unit. The putty-colored metal cladding is awful, the faux brick panels are a pukey pinky shade and look both fake and cheap, and to top it all off the materials appear to have been applied in a very shoddy manner–many things don’t line up properly and there are points of minor damage everywhere. Contrast this with the J which, while obviously too massive, is at least looking not only neat and professional, but surprisingly integrated with its surroundings.

  • as a 9 year resident of the nieghborhood, I’ve seen a lot of development, ut this building just takes the cake. I wake up every day, look out my window and think, “what an eyesore!” And it ain’t going age like fine wine. For the life of me, I don’t know why anyone would want to live in that place.

  • I have to agree I am not too fond of this building design. Every morning I walk by it on the way to the F Train and can’t figure out what they are working on. There is this guy who smokes a cigar and hangs out in a bulldozer but that’s about it. The pictures make it clear some work is being done, but they have a long winter ahead.
