Strike That, Hillary Now OK With BBP Luxury Condos

After Hillary Clinton said that the Brooklyn Bridge Park condos were “disingenuous”, she now says she does not oppose putting the condos in the park.

The housing would provide “an ongoing revenue stream” to maintain the park, Clinton (D-N.Y.) said she had learned since her initial comments when she had concerns about the housing.

“I do not support legal action to oppose the park,” she wrote in an Aug. 16 letter to Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corp. President Wendy Leventer.

Clinton may have spoken too quickly when asked about building condos in the park. If the condos bring revenue to help pay for the park, she thinks it would be a benefit to everyone to have the park rather than delaying the building of the waterfront park.

  • Hillary really disgusted and disappointed me with her flip flop on the housing issue. She was pressured by local elected officials to change her statement criticizing housing placed in a public park. These LEOs have taken all kinds of campaign money from developers like Guttman, Wallentas and Boyemlgreen. They are for sale and apparently so is Senator Clinton.
The park was set up and fought for and won by community groups – volunteer residents, citizens. Then the whole administration of the park was given over to friends of Pataki and their fat cat developer associates. There was never supposed to be any residential housing – luxury or otherwise, never any towers blocking access and views, never any marina for luxury yachts. The so-called budget reluctantly supplied by the ESDC & BBPDC to supposedly mantain the park is overinflated and vague. The BBPC (Park Conservancy) which is supposed to represent the community’s desires and to be a liason between the park administrators and the public is a sham – it is staffed by well paid Brooklyn Heights ladies who pretend to be simply “concerned moms” at community board meetings and other public hearings. They have sold out neighborhoods like DUMBO, allowing the planning of housing on our Con-Ed Lot ( given to DUMBO in retribution for running one of the most polluting plants illegally in this neighborhood) which was specificaly held in trust to be green open space once a park authority was established, in return for the promise of no high rises to be built which might block the precious promenade’s view. It is politics as usual. The best thing any DUMBO resident who cares can do is to get educated as to the real goings on in this whole BBP fiasco.
Don’t just believe what the BBPC tells you, get the whole story, including the years long struggle over which developers would control the waterfront for his own selfish gain – which is far too long to post here. I believe these developers have gained enough personal profit and some things – like waterfront access and enough green open space – are meant for all to enjoy.
