Once upon a time, when Dumbo was pre-gentrified, by parking your car overnight on remote streets, car break-ins and window smashing was in front of mind. That was before Squarehead was caught. It’s been a while since we received reports about broken car windows, but we’ve received three emails in the past week. Three emails does not define a trend, but worth noting here. One resident says:

I’m hoping you can post something about this and get community feedback. yesterday i noticed a Audi on Water st with a broken window. Today, this afternoon, out walking and saw a Volvo on Little St and 3 cars on Gold btw John and Plymouth with broken windows. Called 311…transferred me to 911, who said they can’t do anything, back to 311…who then said to call the precinct. I just called the 84th and the operator said there is nothing for them to do, unless i’m the car owner. Seems odd that they would not want to check out the cars and perhaps notify the owners, or do some drive bys to see if the perp is still active. Basically, they said there is nothing they can do…I can’t believe that since if I saw people breaking into someone’s house, you mean they wouldn’t do anything?

Hoping we don’t have this daily rash of broken windows again now that spring is here. Looks like the police don’t care.

We’re not going to need a NYPD Sky Watch, but anyone else notice car break-ins?

Car window broken on York St

On Tuesday morning, several car owners on York Street, between Washington and Front Street discovered that their windows were smashed. There were at least 7 windows smashed. Broken glass is still littered on the sidewalk/street (as of this morning).

Be on the lookout for suspicious activity and call the 84th Precinct (718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone)) or 911 if you witness any crimes. Please continue to call so they can log/track the area.

Broken car window

Readers have reported recent car break ins on York Street between Adams and Front Street and on Front Street between Gold and Hudson Streets this past week. According to police patrols, they have received at least 6 or 7 reports of car windows smashed or items stolen from cars. Could Squarehead be back on the streets?

Be on the lookout for suspicious activity and call the 84th Precinct (718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone)) or 911 if you witness any crimes. Please continue to call so they can log/track the area. If they get enough calls, they will deploy more patrol or even a NYPD Sky Watch.

Residents in the area have noticed an increase of car window break-ins, especially on Water Street between Gold and Bridge Streets. I know this is a fact of life in NYC. However, residents have seen an increase of car break-ins in Dumbo and Vinegar Hill in the past week or so. A reader sent in the above photo, which showed up on Water Street this weekend. It reads:

Window Smashed? Good chance it was Darren Stone aka Squarehead (known offender) waterstreetwindowsmash@hotmail.com (for info)

Anyone know who Darren Stone is? Also, please call 311, the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone), or 911 if you witness any crimes. The more they hear about these incidents from us, the more they will be watching out. Thanks to everyone who sent emails about this.

1) Subject: More Car Break-ins
Saw some more car windows being broken last night while walking on York street between Washingon and Front Streets. Can you tell the police about this? What can we do to stop this?

[Ed Note: We had the car break-in email from a previous mailbag post, and we get emails every so often about them. Please call 311, the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone), or 911 if you witness any crimes! We did see a few windows broken this morning so if your car was broken into, you may want to get them repaired asap (photos above).]

2) Subject: Local Contractor reviews
Some of the other neighborhoods in our fine borough offer this service via the parent network. Being a parent myself, I’m always looking for people that can build, paint, repair, plumb and wire. Any suggestions? Carl.

[Ed Note: Can anyone provide any suggestions for Carl?]

Washington Street Belgian block repairs

3) Subject: Washington St Repairs
Washington Street is being repaired with new Belgian Blocks. This is great news. I’m wondering, are you going to do work on Main Street next?

[Ed Note: We’re not part of Dumbo Improvement District, but their website states that “three blocks of Washington Street from York Street to Plymouth Street will be completely repaired and restored” and they are continually lobbying the City to restore the Belgian block roadbed as part of the reconstruction. The above roadwork photo was taken this morning as the DOT was working on fixing the Belgian blocks on Washington Street.]
