Dumbo Fight Night (Thu, Sept 8)

September 2nd, 2011

We hear tickets are going quickly for this year’s Dumbo Fight Night, a fundraiser to support Dumbo Business Improvement District and NYPD Boxing Program. Here are the details from the Dumbo BID:

The DUMBO Improvement District is proud to present DUMBO FIGHT NIGHT – Gleason’s Gym v. NYPD’s Fighting Finest on September 8, 2011. Gleason’s Gym – a legendary DUMBO institution and the world’s oldest active boxing gym – will put up 10 fierce fighters to take on a team from the NYPD boxing club. The fights will be USABoxingMetro-sanctioned matches and promise tons of action under the lights at St. Ann’s Warehouse. Funds raised at the event will go to the DUMBO Improvement District and the NYPD Boxing Program.

“This is going to be a great match up – the local boys taking on the boys in blue,” said Alexandria Sica, Executive Director of the DUMBO BID. “We’re thrilled to be hosting the event at St. Ann’s Warehouse – and hope that boxing enthusiasts and DUMBO fans alike come out to celebrate these two amazing athletic institutions.”

One Girl Cookies Opening in Dumbo

September 2nd, 2011

One Girl Cookies, the Boerum Hill Brooklyn bakery and cafe will open at 1 Main Street in Dumbo. Crain’s NY reported that One Girl Cookies signed a 10 year lease for 1,434 square feet. It’s not clear from the article whether they will take space as part of the new concept restaurant by Colonie Executive Chef Brad McDonald or at the existing Bubby’s restaurant. (Can anyone confirm?)

Per the Crain’s article:

“We developed a brand identity and now want to strengthen that brand,” said Dawn Casale. She and her husband Dave founded One Girl Cookies as a wholesale and mail-order operation when they lived in Manhattan. “We already built a foundation and large production facility that could handle a second location.”

The company’s first café at 69 Dean St. in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn—which it opened five and a half years ago—is also home to its baking facilities, which will make daily deliveries to the new DUMBO location a mile away. The new outpost will serve breakfast as well as freshly-baked cakes, cupcakes and other sweets.

Owner Ms. Casale also added that One Girl “hopes to “fill a void in DUMBO.” As she and her husband walked around the neighborhood they realized there wasn’t any place to buy a custom birthday cake or cupcakes for parties and other special events, all One Girl specialties.”

Chef McDonald’s restaurant and One Girl Cookies plan to open around January 2012.

The First Thursday Dumbo Gallery Walk is next Thursday, September 8, 2011, between 6-9pm (NOT tonight as first posted). The gallery walk is free.

Jane’s Carousel is being installed in Brooklyn Bridge Park in the Jean Nouvel designed Pavilion, and will open to the public September 16, 2011.
