[UPDATE: Council Member Levin provided a statement on the proposed relocation of the Brooklyn Borough Property Clerk’s Office to 11 Front Street. Full text below after the jump.]

We’ve heard from a few sources that NYPD is planning to move the Brooklyn Property Clerk’s office, currently at 301 Gold Street, to the former Police Garage under the Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo. CB2 was presented with the plan, as well as the DUMBO BID, and Council member Steve Levin has been working to block this move.

Although the move has not been formally announced, measurements have been taken inside the building for the new office. According to a retired officer, “If the office is moved here, it will bring all sorts down here to retrieve their belongings after release from jail.”

One tipster says: “Obviously, residents are concerned about this, and the placement directly across the street from the planned middle school seems especially unwise. The large numbers of tourists who walk around Fulton Ferry and Dumbo would also be potentially at risk.” We’re not sure if this will happen or if there’s a timetable for this move. What do you think? Will this bring some trouble to Dumbo?

Little Givers, a new educational enrichment program focused on introducing pre-school aged children (3-5) to the world of charitable giving and social action has launched in Dumbo. Our friends who live in Dumbo, Jennifer Cullert, Debra Sapp and Jaimee Schultz were looking for enrichment classes for their pre-school aged children and discovered an important component missing among the music, gym and art offerings in the neighborhood: something that connected the lessons in class to the larger world. So this September, they’ll introduce Little Givers, an enrichment program for three-to-five year olds that combines art, music and storytelling with a community service twist.

During each 11-week session, Little Givers will introduce children to the concept of charitable giving, encourage social awareness and illustrate how an individual’s actions, no matter what age, can impact the world around them. Little Givers programming involves children in age-appropriate activities that benefit their local and global communities – each week children will take on projects that directly impact local homeless shelters, senior centers, and children’s hospitals, as well as other community organizations. In addition, a segment of classes will also focus children on how their actions affect and impact the environment.

The Little Givers curriculum, developed and taught by a certified early childhood education specialist, is specially designed for preschoolers to stimulate social awareness. Little Givers expansion plans include additional neighborhoods and age groups in Winter/Spring 2012.

They are providing a free trial class on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 11am at Pomme in Dumbo (81 Washington Street). RSVP for the free trial class to info@littlegivers.com. Regular classes begin September 10. To learn more and register, visit www.littlegivers.com. Congrats Jen, Debra, and Jaimee!

DNY Open Discussion

August 2nd, 2011

What’s new or on your mind about Dumbo? Please keep it as polite as possible.

Brooklyn Roasting Company

The Brooklyn Roasting Company Cafe “BRC” is now open at 25 Jay Street. As we mentioned in June, there is a coffee/espresso bar with light snacks and lunch at their first retail location. This location also serves as its main roasting plant and distribution center. They also specialize in repairing high end espresso machines.

We searched for the best the coffee in Dumbo by tasting many espressos, but will need to revisit the “Best Coffee in Dumbo” test after the other coffee bar opens at 14 Jay Street. If anyone has tried BRC, please comment below.

DumboNYC Logo by Loop Design

August 1st, 2011

A few months back, I was looking to create a DumboNYC logo. Naturally, I asked around the neighborhood given the many creative directors and designers in Dumbo. There’s a lot of talent in the area. So I got in touch with Jason Carreiro, who has lived in Dumbo for over a dozen years and runs his own design studio. He designed the new logo banner inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge, which borders the east side of Dumbo. The logo is simple, bold, and timeless, like the two bridges that cross over Dumbo. For those interested in learning more about Jason’s design studio, Loop Design, here’s a short description:

Loop Design is an independent, Brooklyn-based design studio run by Designerd and Art Director, Jason Carreiro. Loop Design collaborates with clients (big and small) in developing brand identities, websites and advertising solutions. Prior to starting Loop Design, Jason was the Design Director at the New York office of Delirium Corp. He has over fifteen years of professional experience, designing projects for the likes of Walt Disney, Planet Hollywood, The Rockwell Group, The Boston Bruins, Condé Nast and Ann Taylor.

If you’re interested in seeing more of Jason’s work, go to loopdesigngroup.com. Thanks Jason!
