It’s hard not to smile when you see fellow Dumbo resident and co-founder of Dumbo based WORKSHOP, Jessi Arrington and her rainbow loving ‘first ever stoop-sale, party, excuse-to-clean-out-your-closet-and-help-your-stuff-find-a-new-home, fundraiser, meet-your-neighbors, one-day-only spectacular inside the Manhattan Bridge Hole Sale.’ The Hole Sale event, which is a partnership with the DUMBO Improvement District, is named after the structure under the Manhattan Bridge, is being held under The Archway on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 11am – 4:30pm.

This event is not just a stoop sale. There will be a marching band, music, cupcakes, photo ops, and of course second hand goods for sale. Jessi is getting rid of over 400 items from her very colorful wardrobe so others can enjoy some great second hand goods. You can also drop off donations to sell your stuff for a cause. Proceeds will benefit Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls scholarship fund.

For detailed information (and even some easter eggs), check out Jessi’s Hole Sale website at holesale.org.

[UPDATE 2: News 12 is looking for residents to interview at 10:30am (Wed, April 13) at the corner of Adams/Water Street in Dumbo.]

[UPDATE: News NY1 is looking for residents to be interviewed about neighborhood filming. Please email us at DumboNYC@gmail.com and we'll connect you to the reporter. Thanks.]

When you look at the views of the Brooklyn Bridge or Manhattan Bridge from Dumbo, you can imagine a time when Robert Gair settled in the area in the 1880s, who built up an empire of factories, warehouses, and dock storehouses. Now, artists, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and non-profits are following the hustle of the importers and shipping companies from the late 1800s, and filmmakers what to capture that part of gritty New York. Some residents of Dumbo are saying “enough is enough” to the almost daily filmings in the neighborhood, according to an article in The Brooklyn Paper.

Sometimes there are shootout scenes involving fake gunfire and explosions, or fake chalk lines and fake blood from a crime scene in last week’s filming of Prime Suspect. People don’t seem to mind as long as they know that these are fake scenes (we know from the many email tips we receive reporting what they believe are real ‘incidents’.)

On one hand, residents say we live in a movie set and it’s a small price to pay to live in Dumbo, while the other half say they are “tired of our neighborhood being overrun by film crews” (ref: comment). While many comments to these filmings have centered around the lack of parking spots already during this time of major re-construction in the neighborhood, others say there will always be complainers. The Brooklyn Paper article says that a film ‘moratorium’ could be an option “in certain movie-burdened neighborhoods.” What do you think- To ban or not to ban?

What is a Floating Kabarette, you say? Floating Kabarette is a unique weekly variety show featuring the very best of New York City’s cabaret, burlesque, music, circus, skill & feats, aerial/trapeze, and performance art communities. Its polished, well-produced show fills up the space with alluring narratives of society and culture.

This Saturday’s Floating Kabarette features burlesque by Miss Tickle and Madame Rosebud:

A double dose of titillating burlesque by Miss Tickle and Madame Rosebud!

Madame Rosebud is burlesque’s Eastern Muse. Her specialty: the creation of worlds in which you may comfortably be seduced. As a striptease artist, actor, dancer and storyteller, she has brought her graceful, elegant work to audiences all over the East Coast.

Miss Tickle, crowned the “Queen of gags and gimmicks” for her sorceress-like ability to design and create gorgeous and unparalleled costumes. Tonight’s fantastic lineup also includes the musical stylings of Joseph Keckler, aerial by Joshua Dean, and fabulous hosts, Olga & Bjorn.
