powerHouse Books and The powerHouse Arena invite you to join the book launch party for The Day After Tomorrow: Images of Our Earth in Crisis by J Henry Fair. A brand new title from powerHouse Books, J Henry Fair takes us on a journey to bear witness to the environmental destruction that is currently plaguing our habitat; from a forested mountain in West Virginia blasted out of existence by mountaintop removal mining, to a region in Florida left in radioactive ruin by the phosphate mining industry, J Henry Fair presents hard evidence that our unchecked consumerism is leading the way in the destruction of the ecosystems that sustain us. The primarily aerial images are mesmerizing vistas of pools of agitated paper mill waste, blood-red bauxite impoundments, and the remains of hollowed-out mountains.

NY Casa Group 102 Front Street

[UPDATE: According to @RealEstalker_Ra / Rachel Aschalew, a broker with NY Casa Group, the sales office opens this weekend.]

NY Casa Group, the Wall Street based real estate firm is opening a sales office at 102 Front Street in Dumbo. The space was formerly occupied by Promenade Car Service. There are two other real estate sales offices in Dumbo: Rapid Realty and of course
Two Trees Management, which own many of the buildings in Dumbo. There must be enough turnover in Dumbo to support the real estate offices, since it’s known that Dumbo’s condo and rental inventory is limited.

Olga Guanabara 63 Pearl Street

Olga Guanabara, a custom made furniture studio has opened in Dumbo Brooklyn. The furniture pieces are designed and built in the studio/glass workshop using reclaimed wood by Brazilian born co-owners Richard Velloso and Renato Yoshima. From the Olga Guanabara website, Olga is named for Richard’s chocolate lab dog, and Guanabara comes from the Tupi-Guarani language, goanã-pará,
from gwa “bay,” plus nã “similar to” and ba’ra “sea.” It’s also translated as “the bosom of sea.”

The studio is the former home of Jan Larsen Studios, and in the spirit of bringing creativity and art to the neighborhood, they plan on featuring artists and photography in their space as well. Welcome to Dumbo!
