Since launching the delivery service to Dumbo last year, DinDins has seen growth for their organic toddler food delivery service. They’ve been active on Twitter @dindinsfood and Facebook and have gained quite a following, not only for the convenience for busy parents, but the healthy options that parents in Dumbo (and other boroughs) have. They are having a tasting event on Friday, March 18th at 4 pm in J Condo (100 Jay Street):

Jodi Greebel, an nutritionist started DinDins (www.dindinsfood.com), homemade organic toddler food. (She recommends it for babies 10+ months.) She’s a wealth of information for moms on all subjects related to feeding your little one. The food is delivered fresh to your apartment, but can be frozen for up to three weeks. Their menu changes, but includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options like Banana French Toast Stix, Veggie Crusted Pizza Triangles, Mini Turkey Meatballs and more. Her company has been featured on several popular parenting sites, including Big City Moms, Plum District, as well as Daily Candy. She will be serving her food at a tasting event, being held in the J Condo Media Room (4th Floor) on Friday March 18th at 4 pm. If you would like to attend, please rsvp to Lara at lara.damashek@gmail.com. And if you can make it, please bring your child to taste some of their menu items and feel free to bring some home for their dinner. And of course, if not of the right age yet, then you’ll have learned of a great, healthy option for when they’re ready!

(Homes burned and ships were piled in a mass of debris in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.)

Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded on Friday, March 11, 2011. The magnitude 9.0 quake, followed by a deadly tsunami that slammed into Japan’s coast, leaving a huge swath of devastation in its wake. Thousands of people are dead and many more are still missing or injured. Japan’s Prime Minister called the disaster the country’s worst since World War II. Japan has been one of the top donors for foreign aid by country, and now they need our help. Please make a donation for relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. For the next month, DumboNYC will donate all advertisement proceeds for the Japan quake and tsunami relief fund via the American Red Cross.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s statement on the Japan earthquake and tsunami:

“The devastating earthquake in Japan—one of the worst in recorded history—and the ensuing tsunami have resulted in devastation beyond anyone’s imagination, and our hearts go out to our Japanese brothers and sisters in need. Our proud Brooklyn motto is ‘In Unity There is Strength,’ and Brooklynites have been united once again—as we have been in responding to natural disasters in places such as Haiti, Pakistan and Italy—in opening up their hearts, wallets and pantries to the victims of this catastrophic earthquake and tsunami, as well as their family members here in Brooklyn. For information on donating through the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, please visit the Borough President’s website at www.brooklyn-usa.org and click on the “Japan Earthquake Relief” button.”

If you’d like to donate to the Red Cross efforts, text “redcross” to 90999, and you can make a $10 donation to the organization or go online at redcross.org.

Kids’ drawing station from 2-5PM

$10 / person, $20 / family (up to 2 children and 2 adults)

All drawings $50 each
Location: 81 Front Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Fulfilling DAC’s mission “to catalyze interaction between visual artists, the local community and the wider public,” the Monster Drawing Rally is a unique event that invites members of the public to witness what is usually a private creative process.

Audience members will watch as 20-30 artists at a time create work in-person and on the spot. Using materials supplied by DAC, each group of artists will work for one hour, in shifts starting at 2, 3, 4, and 5PM. A wide range of drawing styles and working methods will be on display.

The event fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the participating artists as they get an inside look at the creative methods of their fellows. For the seasoned art patron, the Drawing Rally provides a fresh look at favorite artists and a chance to discover new talents. While the entire mystery of art making and inspiration will never be fully understood, this event reveals the work, inspirations and magic that go into art. For the audience as a whole, the Monster Drawing Rally will be both an exciting spectacle and a rare opportunity to bring home original artworks at an affordable price.

All drawings created in the Rally will be hung as finished and may be purchased as soon as they are completed. All work will be for sale at the same low price of $50, in the spirit of accessibility and equality that is integral to DAC.

Kids can get involved from 2-5PM at our children’s drawing station. Drawing Rally artists will be on hand to offer guidance and all materials will be provided by DAC.

45 Main Street sign - "NYC's Creative Capital DUMBO"

According to The Real Deal, Two Trees has offered rent free space for one year to The Edible Schoolyard at 55 Washington Street at a 857 square foot office space. According to the story:

Edible Schoolyard NYC is a new non-profit organization that partners with public schools to build gardens and kitchen classrooms to teach students the connection between food and health. Last October, Edible Schoolyard NYC established its first roots at P.S. 216 in Gravesend by transforming a former parking lot into a half-acre organic farm. “Edible Schoolyard NY is a fantastic new cultural and educational addition to the borough for children, and we at Two Trees are so happy to be able to support this initiative,” said Natalie Ungari, associate director of leasing for Two Trees, who represented the landlord.

The Real Deal also states that Two Trees recently leased free space to Sculptors Guild (55 Washington Street), a non-profit arts organization that presents local and traveling exhibitions in commercial buildings and public venues. Of course there are many other non-profit organizations based in Dumbo, such as Brooklyn Community Foundation (45 Main Street) and The New York Foundation for the Arts (20 Jay Street) as well as companies such as Big Duck (45 Main Street) who work exclusively with nonprofit organizations to transform the way they communicate.

(By the way, non-profits based in Dumbo, please contact us at dumbonyc@gmail.com. We’d like to add you to our list of non-profits for future donation consideration. Thanks!)
