Halloween Events in Dumbo 2010

October 29th, 2010

Congrats to Dumbo’s Dewey’s Candy, who was featured in a NY Times article on candy. This weekend for Halloween, there are plenty to do for you, kids, and pets. If you are a parent, be sure to check out parent blogs for other Halloween ides: A Child Grows in Brooklyn, Mommy Poppins, and Momtrends.

Here are a few happening this weekend in and around Dumbo:

1) Kids’ Halloweeen reading and signing for Zen Ghosts By Jon J Muth

Kids’ Reading and Signing. Zen Ghosts is a delightfully spooky and thought-provoking companion to Jon J Muth’s best-selling picture books Zen Shorts (a Caldecott Honor Book) and Zen Ties. Guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats, Zen Ghosts is a haunting story with a surprise, spine-tingling twist at the end. Kids are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes!

If you were around Dumbo late yesterday, you may have seen rainbows. Some caught pics of a double rainbow, like that YouTube video by Hungrybear9562, but was cool to see some photos captured by many others in Dumbo.

A Visit to Gleason’s Gym

October 27th, 2010

At Gleason’s Gym from Heather Quinlan on Vimeo.

Gleason’s Gym in Dumbo was one of those places I’d always wanted to visit, but never quite checked off my list. A couple months ago I finally got the opportunity when I covered the De La Hoya press conference, and I was completely hooked. Oscar De La Hoya, Paulie Malignaggi, AND I scored an interview with the great Bert Sugar. I had to go back!

Owner Bruce Silverglade and his staff were terrific, and I was allowed to stay as long as I liked, which took me by surprise, as I’m used to being shooed away after a couple minutes—I got so much footage my battery nearly exploded. So come take a tour of the gym, lead by a trainer called Country.

Tennis in The Archway

October 27th, 2010

Tennis in the Arch

Sometimes wandering near the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge, you may run into interesting events, people, or things. Josh Derr found a couple of people playing tennis there this morning. He writes “It appears DUMBO has a second tennis court now. Not only is it covered, but its public too. Anyone for a game today?”

Maybe Dumbo resident Brooklyn Decker’s husband Andy Roddick and Roger Federer can recreate the Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras NYC Street Tennis commercial they filmed for Nike back in 95.

Sacro-Occipital Technique is a highly specific chiropractic adjusting method, with research and refinements validating the approach for over 70 years. This technique combines your health history with structural, orthopedic and neurological indicators to identify patterns which are inhibiting your total health. Then very gentle, safe adjustments are made to your spine, head and other key areas to counteract these patterns. The objective is to create balance and stability mechanically and neurologically, as well as with the connection between the cranial bones and the pelvis that is so important to overall balance and health.
