Dumbo’s First Stoplight Being Installed

Another development that shows that Dumbo is ‘growing up’ (read: gentrified), Dumbo is getting its first stoplight on the corner of Jay and York Street. The DOT crews were pouring concrete in the foundation this afternoon to install the base of the streetlights (photo of base). This corner is near the F station entrance and gets busy with pedestrians in the morning and afternoon.
We guessed correctly, after the Dumbo Improvement District tweeted a message with a photo yesterday of lamp post being removed. Not confirmed yet, but there are talks about having other stop lights on Washington and York Street and on Front and Pearl Adams Street. [correction: There's a request for a stop sign (not light) on Front and Pearl, and not Adams as originally posted.]
We’re no city planners, but with the increased number of pedestrians in the area, the lights should help avoid any accidents…in theory. Do you think this will help our neighborhood? Are there other corners that need a stop light?

Given the utter inability of drivers to actually follow the “One Way” signs around the neighborhood, I doubt stop lights will help.

I see a lot of that on Main Street, (especially during the construction).

It's actually gotten worse on Water Street *with* the construction. At night there's a steady stream of cars driving towards Main on Water down the barely wide enough single lane. Doesn’t even matter if the orange traffic barrels are up, drivers dutifully stop, push the barrel aside, and continue on. Not stopping at Main or Washington of course since there's no stop signs there.

Yeah, cars have always barreled through that Water/Main intersection, and it's worse with the construction. It doesn't seem like a big enough corner to warrant a stoplight, but they should probably at least put up stop signs.

I like how drivers seem to be more cautious in Dumbo than in many other parts of Brooklyn. I hope the lights don't mean that they will feel entitled to speed through a green light.

the problem with this intersection is more on the pedestrians than the drivers. as one of the souls unfortunate enough to own a car while living in dumbo, i've spent my fair share of time waiting at this intersection while wave after wave of pedestrians cross the street. a light may bring some order to this situation.

I think rather than lights, a stop sign at Pearl or Adams on Front would do.
At Main & Water we could use a 4 way stop of course.

i hear ya, but ppl don't seem to obey the stop signs so much. at least with the light, they're forced to stop, as are the pedestrians.

This is an infringement on my rights combined with the 84th faggotryism setting their trap for seat belt/cellphone/crossing yellow line at the exit of the Manhattan Bridge. I feel like I'm entering North Korea.
