PSA: Incidence of Crime in Dumbo

Just after I talked about the gentrification of Dumbo yesterday by saying that Dumbo is on new MTA map, that doesn’t mean Dumbo is insulated from crime. In fact, the oft sensational New York Post titles the latest 84th Precinct crime report “Massive Crime in Dumbo“. Not sure how they define ‘massive‘, but the latest report reported not only some iPhone, Blackberry, and other thefts, but a ‘thug’ beat up a guy walking on Front Street (between Bridge and Gold Streets, near the above photo) on May 26 and stole his bookbag after punching and kicking him in the head. According to a neighbor we spoke to:
“One happened last night (May 25) around midnight. Guy was sent to the hospital with a busted nose and a fucked-up shoulder. His bag was taken. This afternoon (May 26), around noonish, another man was mugged on the same block. Not assaulted but robbed.”
Detectives told the neighbor that there are two explanations for a recent spike in crime: 1) budget cuts have had some local jails release a bunch of juvenile delinquents, and 2) the summer heat. Even if it’s daytime, be aware of your surroundings and report any incidents to the 84th Precinct.
Call 311 or the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone) so they can record and track the incidents. The 84th Precinct have been responsive to resident’s calls, so keep reporting the crimes so all residents in Vinegar Hill, Dumbo, and surrounding areas live in a safer neighborhood.

A few weeks ago I was walking home around midnight on Front between Bridge and Gold and passed 4 unusual characters. I passed them and noticed one of them started to pursue me. I recognized his presence and realized something bad was about to happen. Luckily there were some people outside of 99 Gold and he stopped pursuit. This block is very dark and there needs to be additional lighting. 30 minutes later and a phone call to the local precint, I see the same characters walking back in the other direction towards the PJ's.

I called the 84th a few weeks ago to report a bunch of people taking beers out of a cooler that they had stashed in the back of their car. They never responded. I called several time to tell them that they were partying in the street, getting in their cars, and driving away drunk. There may be budget cuts, but the 84th is not as diligent as they should be. I called several times and they didn't even answer the phone!
