Choice Market (Dumbo) Open for Business
February 18th, 2010
[UPDATE May 2011: Choice Market has a new owner. It is now called The Gallery. Therefore the reviews/comments are no longer valid.]
Choice Market, a cafe and takeout store/restaurant in Dumbo, is officially open for business today. Judging by the number of emails we’ve received about it, Dumbo is ready to welcome a breakfast/lunch/dinner option. Choice is aiming to be a community oriented cafe, and with the custom artwork on the ceiling and decor and large wooden booths, it looks like a good place to grab a cup of Stumptown coffee and a sandwich. For now, they are open at 6am to 4pm every day but will extend hours to 11pm by around mid-March.
The ceiling and interior was designed and produced by Evan Douglis Studio, of Greenpoint Brooklyn. More photos on the Flickr site here.

Weird name for a restaurant. I was expecting another Foragers. Awesome website though!

I guess they don't have one up yet. I've edited that out.

Their menu looks awesome. Can't wait to try it!

Out of the great design of the restaurant this is the only pictures they put up? What about the ceiling design? Or the blown glass lights? Or the custom seating and metalwork?

I'm not a photographer and cannot do it justice. Feel free to post photos on the DumboNYC flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/groups/dumbonyc/

I just went there at 2pm on Friday and they were backed up on food orders, out of some food, and there was an hour wait. They told me they weren't taking orders (in other words, to leave the store). Some community restaurant!
Either Dumbo is in desperate need of more decent lunch options or this restaurant completely missed the mark on food supplies for their opening week.

they really need to figure out how to make their service smoother!
my friend and i went for lunch at 12:30 thursday, opening day. the guy who took our order seemed to have not been briefed about the menu AT ALL (which is scary for people with food allergies like myself). he also didn't get the order right (which, for a first day i was willing to overlook). then it took an hour to bring us a chicken salad sandwich and a small bowl of french fries.
there were like 12 people or more bustling around behind the counter, but no one seemed to have a designated role and it looked like chaos. hey, choice market: how bout a little division of labor??
i lived nearby the other choice market in clinton hill when it first opened in 2005ish. it was super frustrating service, which i was hoping they'd have worked out by now. witnessing this location on opening day, was proof that this couold remain like this for a while…

I’m surprised they close at 4:00, would seem to miss the bloc of commuters going to/from York St.

The manager told me that they are planning on extending hours until 11pm by mid-March or so.

I notified the publisher who took down the story for now, so that link no longer works.

I've been looking to their opening for so long! This is the perfect lunch option for DUMBO. It adds so much variety. I've been a patron to the one by my house in Clinton Hill. The scones are great!
I think I'm also very willing to allow for some kinks for the first week or so. The service in the one in Clinton Hill is very… french. Not the best place if you're in a hurry. I appreciate the steps they have taken to make that better (numbers, 2 ordering spots, etc.). We'll see how that works out.
It goes to show that the right option can be so successful in DUMBO, so deprived in affordable easy-going lunch places.

Does the staff expect a tip when they deliver orders to your table?
February 20th, 2010 at 11:45 am
Let me preface this by saying I think it's fantastic that this place has opened here and am sure things will get better in time.. now for some warnings….
The first time I went, I waited 15 minutes (there was only one person ahead of me in line) to buy one beverage. Which I believe I was overcharged {those lil vita coconut juices are supposed to be 4 bucks?}
The 2nd time I went, it looked like it was going to take forever so I left.
The 3rd time I went (today), they screwed up both of our breakfast orders therefore was over-charged 5 bucks.
I was told potatoes do not exist on the premises nor are they on the menu. (But they _are_ on the menu and they _do_ exist in the restaurant, and they did not run out).
Minor complaints: Toast isn't buttered, no salt n pepper at the tables, no ketchup bottles, just little packages.
Major complaint: The eggs-over easy were not cooked and gross and had to send back. Stick to the scrambled.
Despite all this I am not giving up!
The bill was finally corrected.,The turkey bacon was not bad, and the potatoes finally came and were not bad and the manager was pleasant about it all. Next time I may have more success with something else.
I'm sure they're just working things out as they just opened and yes for the record, I did leave a tip.

We went on Saturday to check it out… and loved it.
Yes, they are still in the process of figuring stuff out… A part of our order was missing so we had to remind the very friendly server… Chai Latte was not recommended as quote “we are still figuring out to find the right mix” unquote.. what is fine – we will wait till the right mix is figured out :-)).
The regular Latte was very good, the (raw) vegetable sandwich was great!
“Choice” is a good addition to the neighborhood. It very convenient to stop by, order quick and have a seat (if not too crowed). We will be back !!

Anyone know if they have well labeled vegan options like the spot in Clinton Hill? What about Intelligentsia coffee (please say yes)?

Food is okay, but portions are small. Especially when two sandwiches and two juice drinks are $24.00.

An order of a hamburger took 45 mins to get and at the end it was a not the correct order! People were laid back but they shouldn't laid back on taking orders. Very amateur management in nice looking place. I wouldn't suggest you to waste your money there before they have as solid system that works…

I don’t understand why the oatmeal is never available before the 12 p.m. deadline. It’s definitely not great customer service for the product not to be provided to the guests that call in, and frankly I think this place can do a better job of catering to customer needs. Just make another pot!
