Dumbo NYC

Notes from the DUMBO, Brooklyn NY neighborhood

You’re not getting fast enough speeds from your current network provider in Brooklyn? Google announced yesterday that they are testing an ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. How about downloading a high definition movie in less than 5 minutes? With speeds of 1 gigabit per second (1000 megabites per second) over fiber, it is possible. And Google is asking for interested communities through a Request for information (RFI), which they’ll use to determine where to build their network.

Japan has had Gbps fiber since 2008 for residents, so it’s about time the US is starting to see this. We think that Vinegar Hill/Dumbo/Fulton Ferry area would be perfect for this network, given the increased number of residents in the area and tech companies in Dumbo. Dumbo is known for its concentration of digital media businesses and entrepreneurs, recently named the Digital District of NYC (ref: NBC and Mediabistro). The fiber investment in the area will allow these innovative businesses in Dumbo to continue to create the next generation apps and show the world what can be done with new technology (Think BIG!). Don’t you think Dumbo would be the perfect community for Google’s fiber network pilot?

Corinne, you've missed the key detail that this is an ultra high speed internet service that is ideally geared towards pro users and particularly the kinds of businesses in dumbo -- tech firms, design studios, media companies, etc who have especially high bandwidth needs. This has nothing to do with free internet access.

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. I think this opportunity is much better granted to low-income communities who would not otherwise be able to afford high-speed internet access.
  • It's not necessarily free internet service. Google will consider subsidizing the cost of installation in a community, but will eventually be another choice of internet service. Google's "Do no evil" is admirable, but they're not going to give away fiber connection for free.

Hopefully if it happens in a Two Trees building the people at Two Tress will have nothing to do with it. If they do it will be another disaster like all of their handy work.
