NYCgo.com, NYC’s official marketing and tourism organization published their Brooklyn neighborhood highlights for “BoCoCa”, Brooklyn Heights, and Dumbo. Their intro to Dumbo:
“With its rumbling of trains overhead, cobblestone streets and cavernous spaces carved out of former factories, DUMBO (an acronym for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”) exudes a cool, urban grandeur that sets it apart from bustling Downtown Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Nestled against the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge, this neighborhood has transformed during the past few decades from an industrial zone into an artsy enclave of airy lofts, unique galleries and fashionable boutiques…”
Their “10 Great Things to See” in Dumbo are:
- powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street
- St. Ann’s Warehouse, 38 Water Street
- Zakka, 155 Plymouth Street
- First Thursday DUMBO Gallery Walk, various locations in Dumbo
- Almondine Bakery, 85 Water Street
- Baxter & Liebchen, 33 Jay Street
- Blueberi, 143 Front Street
- Brooklyn Flea Winter Pop-Up, 81 Front Street
- Galapagos Floating Cabaret, 16 Main Street
- Etsy Labs Presents Craft Night, 55 Washington Street, Suite 512
After the jump, see a YouTube video interview of the Zakka owner, Toshiki Okazaki.
From NYCgo.com:
Toshiki Okazaki, artist and owner of the Japanese art and design store Zakka in DUMBO, speaks for many when he talks about how he was immediately attracted by the charm of New York during his first visit in 1982. “I was excited by the diversity in New York,” he says, “and that made me want to live here and feel it with my own skin.” Okazaki brings his interest in Japanese street culture to his store (“zakka” means “a variety of products” in Japanese) and involves local artists in his gallery as well—including his invitation to Ryan McGinness, a well-known New York artist and graphic designer, to design the store’s logo.
