Dumbo Muffin NOT DUMBO Muffins
November 25th, 2009
A few of our readers noticed the new storefront “Dumbo Muffin” on Pearl Street. Naturally, we thought that it was the DUMBO Muffins (featured on DumboNYC last year) opening a retail outlet in Dumbo. So we contacted the owner of DUMBO Muffins, Gregory, to let him know we’ve received emails from our readers about the new cafe. We did not realize that it is not his company, DUMBO Muffins (with an “S”) and that “they are impostors”. His lawyers have sent a cease and desist letter to stop using the DUMBO Muffins name. Says Gregory, “The awning on their store says Dumbo Muffin, not DUMBO Muffins. They need to stop using our name. Although we intend to open a retail location in time, this is not our store and have no affiliation with them whatsoever.” Oops. Hmm, maybe someone can open a McDonald in Dumbo so we can have our burgers.
If you’re the owner of “Dumbo Muffin”, please email us so we can clear this up?

Not cool, we thought it was dumbo muffins. We like those guys.

This is catastrophic. I don't see the neighborhood surviving a Muffin(s) War.

Ack! You actually said something funny. Wonders never cease…still a wanker though.

We need more chain stores.

Interesting that because of a “threat” by Dumbo Muffins (supposedly “one of us”) to go retail in the neighborhood (threatening for years) this poor shmuck's opening is ignored, (possibly the same day as Choice?). Given the anemic birth of new businesses in Dumbo it strikes me as narrow minded pandering by DumboNYC to ignore any changes to the retail scene. Especially given the coverage of some of the retail runts that have opened. You of course are under no obligation to do so, I just find it interesting in a amusing sort of PC way.
sincerely,

LS, good observation. You're correct, they did open a week after Choice opened. Don't mean to ignore them. I haven't had a chance to try yet. Have you?
Also, a few of the staff have quit due to wage disputes, according to emails sent to us. It sounds like they have something against the owner, but maybe he's pressured to keep costs low to stay in business.

No DNYC, I have not tried them and haven't tried Choice either, but I didn't realize there was a quality requirement to get a mention in DumboNYC. Most of the business openings are simply stated with the reviews falling where they may.
Alleged wage disputes? That's a problem that could of been addressed by responses to a posting about the opening. That would of absolved you of reporting something without corroboration.

LS, no quality requirement needed (as seen with some older establishments that closed). You should publish a blog; it would be an interesting read.
