There will be an art show/concert in Dumbo on June 12, from 10:30am – 6:00pm. In the morning and we will be hosting a variety of local Brooklyn bands (Motel Motel, Kittens Ablaze, Tony Castles, Forest City, Eskalators and Forensics). Further we will have murals, sculptures (18 ft hand carved wooden skeleton), paintings, interactive art installations and live graffiti under the archways right outside our venue (155 Water Street) (the canvas that the graffiti will be on will be raffled of at the end, or possibly donated).
This will be a unique event that showcases different types of art. See brooklyninvitational.blogspot.com for a preview.
2) Friday: Thekla Ehling/Etsuko Ichikawa at Randall Scott Gallery
Artist’s Reception, June 12th, 7pm-9pm at Randall Scott Gallery, 111 Front Street #204
Thekla Ehling is based In Köln, Germany, this is her first solo exhibition in the United States and corresponds with the release of her book, Sommerherz. With a blaze of fire and smoke, Etsuko Ichikawa applies a methodically shaped piece of molten glass directly to heavy stock paper. Her large scale “Glass Pyrographs” carry the action of painting, as she works her paper surface from all angles, allowing the molten glass to burn into her medium.
3) Saturday: ARTSCAPISM
The Sound of Art announces the launching of ARTSCAPISM, a weekend-long art extravaganza that begins on Friday, June 12th at 6 PM in Washington Heights and culminates on Saturday, June 13th at Midnight in Dumbo.
ARTSCAPISM is an SOA first; 2 extraordinary art events taking place back to back – one on Friday night entitled BUENA SUERTE SERIES featuring the work of the illustrious M. Tony Peralta at the Uptown Boutique PROBUS and the other on Saturday showcasing the work of none other than Craig Anthony Miller at his new abode in Dumbo aptly named CAM’S CRIB. ARTSCAPISM is an all out weekend art bender that traverses Manhattan and Brooklyn in the matter of 2 days. One event will righteously holler “hope” from the heights of Northern Manhattan while the other celebrates new beginnings from the depths of Planet Brooklyn.
The BUENA SUERTE SERIES is an artistic riff on the hopeful imagery of “belones” – the votive candles cherished by Latinos. This exhibit, held at PROBUS, goes hand in hand with the launching of a collection of T-shirts that bare the same motifs as the artwork. There will be an after party for this event held at the LOCKSMITH BAR. Not to be outdone, Mr. Miller will be hosting CAM’S CRIB, a “down-home-house-warming-get-together”, with his art as the focal point. This intimate affair will welcome SOA patrons as family to christen the artist’s new digs. This event will be introduced with an outdoor picnic at 4 PM before the function begins at 6.

With Rezoning Passed, What’s Next For Dock Street Dumbo?
June 11th, 2009
As you know, the decision by City Council to approve the rezoning of the Dock Street Dumbo development project filed by Two Trees Management concludes this process, but for Two Trees Management, there’s a lot of work to be done. Now that this two year process has concluded, the process for the demolition, design and build out of the apartments, school, and retail will begin.
The New York Times posted an article that since the rezoning has been approved, St. Ann’s Warehouse will need a new home now that its 14,000 square foot space in Dumbo is scheduled to be turned into the Dock St Dumbo development. St. Ann’s produces great programming and work, so it’s unfortunate that they will have to move out, but artistic director Susan Feldman said that the developers are committed to helping St. Ann’s find a new space. St. Ann’s has always known that the space was temporary, so this was expected. According to the NY Times article, “it moved to the current warehouse space (a former spice milling factory) in 2001, and was initially supposed to stay there for only nine months.”
After yesterday’s, City Council decision, we wanted to know what the next steps are, so we asked Jed Walentas:
Q) Now that the rezoning has been approved for Dock Street, what are your next steps?
A) There is a fairly lengthy design process we need to go through that we will start over the next few months. That will take at least a year. We also have to formalize a contract with the SCA. There is a requirement for there to be a public school.
Q) How long until the proposed development begins work on the site and when do you anticipate the completion of the building?
A) In the best case scenario, work will begin there in a year. That is somewhat credit and economy dependent. It will probably take 2 years to build – start to finish. [Ed note: The start the construction process will be around mid-year 2010 and complete work in 2012 based on these ideal timelines.]
Q) Is there anything you’d like to convey to the people opposed to the Dock Street Dumbo plans?
A) I hope we build a building that everyone is proud of and makes use of becomes an important and cherished part of the community. I hope everyone can work together to create the best public middle school in the city.
Media Circus: The Business of Hyperlocal (Thu, June 11)
June 11th, 2009

Media Circus returns to Dumbo Brooklyn tonight, June 11, with a night dedicated to The Business of Hyplerocal. The dream of targeted online journalism—a newspaper tailored just for you!—is finally being realized, but is it sustainable? Gelf’s monthly speaking series on all things media will examine hyperlocal by hearing from the people driving it.
Mark Josephson, CEO of the hyperlocal Dumbo-based start-up Outside. In (interview here), will be joined by Andy Newman, the Brooklyn-based blogger for the New York Times’s The Local (interview here), and Jake Dobkin, publisher of Gothamist (another Dumbo-based business) (interview here). The work of local artists will be on display, as well.
The event will be held Thursday, June 11, at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm) at the JLA Studios art gallery on 63 Pearl St. in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn—just one subway stop away from Manhattan! Admission is FREE. Drinks will be available.
[UPDATE: The full Council just voted 39-9 in support of the project, with the no-votes from Councilmembers Tony Avella, Charles Barron, Bill DeBlasio, Vincent Gentile, Eric Gioia, John Liu, Peter Vallone, and, of course, David Yassky. More from Sarah Portlock who is live blogging on the Brooklyn Heights Blog.]
Ever since we first announced on this site that the Dock Street Dumbo plans were revealed, there have been heated discussions between supporters and opposition to the project. For two years, we have heard good arguments for and against the proposed rezoning of the Dock Street property, and today, the final decision will be made by a full City Council vote. Today’s vote will likely approve the zoning application as the Land Use City Council Committee and the Zoning and Franchises subcommittee voted to approve the changes last week.
Although the zoning application will likely be approved, the Dumbo Neighborhood Alliance has requested that that New York State Attorney General look at the evidence of “impropriety and possible corruption on Dock Street.” “Land Use Committee Chairwoman Melinda R. Katz and Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn are pressuring the City Council to rush through this project even in the face of hard, irrefutable evidence of impropriety, not only on the part of the developer and the School Construction Authority but, perhaps, the Mayor’s office,” states DNA president Gus Sheha. (See DNA’s letter sent on June 9 (PDF)).
Two Trees Management previously failed to gain approval for rezoning in 2004. The current proposal includes affordable housing, a 45,000 sq ft middle school space, and approximately 400 underground parking spaces.
City Council will vote on the Dock St Dumbo rezoning application today, Wednesday, June 10 at 1:30p, at City Hall in NYC.
