Just have them draw lines accordingly and then people will know, and there will always be the right amount of space.

Ever notice that the city does not mark fire hydrant no parking.

The city does not like people marking where you can and cannot park. In park slope years ago a fellow used to mark the legal no parking area with paint. The city was angry saying he might not have it accurate and he needed to stop.

The hydrant is over 9 feet from the curb. So does that mean you really only need to park 6ft from it?

Err… that would be 12ft back at the curb, not 6. Not that I’m expecting the tow truck operator to do basic trig before they cart a vehicle away at this spot.
