You’ve seen several of the talented RWK street art around Dumbo. Here’s one spotted on Pearl Street over the weekend. Below is one from Water Street between Jay and Bridge Streets.

I don’t get it. This is art? Someone is making money doing this? Good for them.

  2. kev/psyn Says:

    beautiful shots! thanks!

    `kev [rwk]

  3. Womanhattan Says:

Yeah, thats the problem with too many people in Dumbo – they dont get it either.

  4. shut yo mouth Says:

yo, these shots are awesome. and the artwork as well.

  5. Bob Says:

Don’t “get it” or don’t buy into the ridiculous idea that this is “art”. Please.

  6. Anon Says:

I love finding interesting bits and pieces while walking through the neighborhood. Yes, it’s creative expression. It’s fun. It’s art. Appreciate it or more your ass to Newark.

  7. oscar Says:

BOB – How is that NOT art? You’re an idiot. Furthermore, you don’t have to make money in order for your work to be considered art so Angus, you’re an idiot too.

  8. Bob Angus Says:

It’s funny to see you people get pissed over stupidity like this. So he should move to Newark because some idiot did a stick drawing they want to be recognized as art that he doesn’t see as art? Ooookkkay.

And Oscar…I suppose every 5yo on the planet with crayons is an artiste too huh. You’re an ignorant douche.

Some people create art, some people try, fail miserably, and get pissed when their crappy creations are shitted on. I shit on your stupid stick figure “art” too. Pansies.

  9. oscar Says:

Yes, actually every single person who creates is an artist.
I don’t give a goddamn what you want to shit on or what you want to hang above your fireplace. Your opinion is your right and I would never be so presumptuous as to call you an idiot based solely on your tastes no matter how much I disagree with them. I do however object to people (you, bob) who would make asinine declarations, dripping with self-importance, about what can and cannot be considered art. You do not have license to draw those boundaries and for assuming that role, you sir are an idiot. Your attitude is extremely unproductive and wholly unneeded.
And yes, even children with crayons are artists.

  10. Artiste Says:

amen that oscar. Who says art has to be on a wall in a gallery? Street art is an expression and can make people who see them happy. Go rwk.

  11. felix Says:

I piss on your grave Oscar.

  12. Thats's art? Says:

People just don’t get it…..Art is also about inspiring reaction. So BOB not thinking it’s art just reinforces it! It’s art, just because, Bob.

  13. 2cent Says:

I”m not really a fan of much “art” and a lot of it gets my eyes rolling, but I think these rwk things are cool. They fit in well with the neighborhood too.

  14. dumbostreets Says:

Yes, that’s art. It’s called “street art”, hence the street and streety-ness. Get it? A little folk thrown in for good measure…

Jerking off under a ramp. Yep, that’s art. So is a urinal. Getting shot is art too, just in case you were wondering. So it sleeping with an artist for money; aka prostitution… at least potentially.

So, if you had to ask, it probably is. There’s always the Met if you like impressionism.

  15. Bob Angus Says:

God, no wonder DUMBO sucks now. It’s full of self-important whiny wankers.

I think I’ll leave all of you with a little street present, oh excuse me – “art”, on top of your precious robot stick drawings. We’ll see how you like it then bitches.

  16. dumbostreets Says:

Bob, I’ve been in Brooklyn for (at least) 20 years… and my experience is that Dumbo contains a lot of creatives who know something about art.

On the contrary, I find your attitudes and lack of art-smartness (and maybe lack of general smartness) very un-Dumbo.

  17. oscar Says:

“God, no wonder DUMBO sucks now. It’s full of self-important whiny wankers.”
I don’t know if it’s full of them Bob, but I can think of at least one.

  18. That's art? Says:

BOB, take it from someone who has been here for over 30 years. It’s typical art in DUMBO.

  19. DumboGuy Says:

About a year or so ago on a Friday afternoon a contractor working on part of the sewer on Main Street dropped off some 12″-18″ round yellow PVC pipe they was going to use the next week. They placed the pipe on the sidewalk area in front of what is now Galapagos. They didn’t pile it up or even put it on the sidewalk very neatly. A couple of pieces of varying lengths were standing on end. A couple of 90 and 45 degree pieces, a “T”….each was randomly placed a few feet away from the other and the whole collection spread out across the sidewalk. I spent the whole weekend watching couples, groups and individuals stop to view the “art”. Many took pictures. It was HILARIOUS. I still haven’t decided if it was a great example of the pretentiousness of art snobs……. or art (unintentional as it was). It was funny though.

  20. Bob Angus Says:

Hehehe, now that’s what I’m talking about.

  21. dumbostreets Says:

Confusing art and life has been a thing for the past 100 years and DumboGuy sounds like he is keeping an open mind.

… but forget the Dadaist if you think they are too modern, you can go back to Plato, who failed to define “art”… he even made some points about art (such as something made out of gold is not necessarily more artistic than something made out of wood ) that might suggest the PVC could be art…

The larger point is that art is inherently subjective and you can argue about what is *good*… but it is really problematic to go a step further and tell people you know what art is…

If you do, you’re smarter than Plato. Good for you… but just check yourself and make sure it is the “art snobs” who are being “pretentious.”
