Does anyone know how the Halcyon sign got smashed? It happened at least three years ago. It took some heavy damage on the 1st 2-3 letters and was never repaired. You can see the damage in the above photo.

Thanks for the props womanhattan :)
Anon – wish we knew how it happened. Legend has it that a garbage truck backed into it. Anyone know who drives garbage trucks around pearl street?..
For the record, it’s not repairable, and our friends at Skewville who made it had worked very hard on it, so we just decided to keep it as is. Consider it a marker representing the neighborhood’s rough around the edges past. One day we might be inspired to switch it up, maybe take a bat to the rest of it to even it out or something….

I know how the Halcyon sign got smashed. There is a trucking company that regularly pulls down water street, and turns right on Pearl. A big truck–practically an 18-wheeler, making a sharp right on a small street, has to go up and onto the sidewalk to clear the turn. In this case, I saw the truck grazing the (already smashed) sign, and realized: oh, so that’s how it got destroyed.
I’ve seen the truck a few times–the company name is on the door–but I forget the name. I saw the truck because I used to park on Water, in the pre-Classic Window Smashing Era. Halcyon should turn their Web cam onto the corner, and see what company it is, and ask them to re-route their trucks, at the very least.
