Just what DUMBO needs: more $40 throw pillows. Too bad I know how to get to Etsy.com to find crap like this. You guys should have opened up a sandwich shop.
I give it six months.

i mean, seriously, i know what I’m gonna get when I walk in here. Fantastically, comically overpriced versions of Pier One/Target style generic bowls and glass candle holders at ten or fifteen times the price. What are they thinking? How could they possibly think this is a viable business? I’m glad I’m not funding it.

they’ll be outta business in 1yr. does anyone buy furniture in the hopes that it will last a lifetime? once I buy a set — im already thinking about the next one. I wish them all the best.

It looks like it is a design collective, so they sell directly from the designer.
I don’t know if that translates into lower prices… but if you are in the market for some nice pieces you can pass on a better margin to the maker of the wares, at least.
Dumbo gets written up in the Times and etc. because of its cultural brand. This translates into foot traffic and etc. which, in turn, builds support for more services — not the other way around.

Thank you for your comments regarding my showroom. I would like to point out that some of the designers & artists have been in business for years, and some just a few, but all are directly affected by the economy. This showroom is an effort to pool our efforts and get through this crisis. Every piece in the space is handmade by the artist, and a lot of the work is made locally. Dumbo has become a destination for art and those who appreciate it. Of course art and good design is a luxury to some, but there are those for whom it is a necessity.

I am one of the designers in the showroom and the concept of the showroom is to provide a space that the designers could all use to showcase their work in a supportive environment.
The criteria for the designers was to have several qualities in common. Handmade, luxury, made in the US and with a similar price point. The work is so design conscious that it does not typically fit in to a craft gallery atmosphere but also too high end to stand out in a showroom with lower price points with items made in factories over seas.
All of the designers are highly acclaimed but are still struggling with the ups and downs of the economy. Each piece is of heirloom quality and is obviously not for everybody. This is for the design enthusiast that wants to capture the essence of amazing 21st century design.
Aside from purchasing products the showroom also creates an environment for design lovers to get involved with their designer and create a timeless piece or experience.
Most of us do not have a showroom, if you wanted to view our work you would need to come to our studios. The effort is to pool the work and create a resource for buyers, architects and interior designers as well as the collector. Most of the designers have studios that have been established for 10-20 years. At this point in this economy it would be a tragedy to let everyone’s studio and life’s work fall victim to today’s circumstances.
