Dumbo Getting a Post Office Storefront
March 12th, 2009

During the Community Board 2′s meeting last night, they announced that the USPS will open a storefront in Dumbo ‘in the near future’ to alleviate overcrowding at the busy station, said Cadman Plaza Station manager George Baez, as reported by Brooklyn Heights Blog. Currently, there is a Post Office truck stationed in Dumbo usually on Front or Washington Street during the week. Per Brooklyn Heights Blog:
“…The storefront at 85 Front St., which is between Main and Washington streets, will have an automated postal center, which are the machines that process your post via credit card and without a clerk.”
85 Front is between Washington and Adams, so not sure if CB2 meant that or if the PO will actually be between Main and Washington Streets. Either way, no word on timing, but this is a welcome addition for residents who currently have to take their packages to the Cadman Plaza Post Office.

The USPS signed a lease with the developer at The Nexus (84 Front). The space with the double glass doors next to Front St. Pizza.

this is about as exciting as watching paint dry. still, it is a much better commercial addition to the neighborhhod than, say, oh, i don’t know, mikey’s hookup? how’s that place working out for everybody? it’s always so packed with people dying for printer cables, external hard drives and a free game of ping-pong which, oh, that’s right, you’re not even allowed to play. i guess everyone was right — it’s one of those places you don’t think you’ll need but then once you have it you can’t imagine your life without it. so much better than a real drugstore/sundries store, i can totally see that now. i’m big enough to admit it. dripping in what? sarcasm? i don’t understand…

That kind of like hating on the hardware store because someone else in your house does all the home repair. I mail small packages all the time and would rather not deal with Cadman Plaza, which is not only a decent walk from Vinegar Hill but doesn’t have automated postage.
Mikey’s is kind of awesome, actually. When you work with media frequently it’s nice to have a place nearby that does Applecare service on site, stocks external hard drives, blank CDs, Avery labels, etc. Oh, and the ping-pong is free.

i didn’t say i hated the usps store, i just said it was b-o-r-i-n-g. at least it is something that everyone in the d-hood can use and appreciate (although the walk up cadman plaza to the other PO is quite nice this and any other time of year — tear yourself away from your online gaming, get outside and get some fresh air, computer nerd). and i’m sorry, i’m just not buying the mikey’s thing. sure, i’m sure there are a few people here that appreciate it (even murderers get visitors in prison), but it doesn’t serve the greater good, and we need all we can get here in this isolated little slice of bklyn. wait, did you say they stock avery labels? oh goodness, how could i have been so close-minded. and re ping pong, i was not allowed to permitted the one time i tried. perhaps it was racial profiling. what? no, not here in dumbo. never!

whatever, sick. or is that you loose? i like mikey’s too. i have my business in dumbo and have had three computers fixed there – i think its a great addition to the neighborhood. sounds like you have a personal issue with them. and since when is the mission of a retail store to serve everyone in the greater good. they fill a need for alot of the businesses, designers and artists here…its called a niche.

i am not loose. but you know who is? your mother. oh, burn!

ha-ha…you wish. that was the lamest comeback in history.

well, i’m excited about the usps storefront. call me crazy “sick”, but it’s kind of tough for me to take 30-45 minutes out of my work day to walk up to cadman post office, regardless of the weather. ah well, maybe you have a lot of spare time. for the same reason i’m happy about and use mikey’s. i’m sure the many creative/media companies now in dumbo are fairly pleased about both.

Walking to Cadman Plaza is only half of it. Then you have to deal with the staff there. Never have so many people seemed so uninterested in what they’re doing.

um, brian, i doubt the staff at the new post office will be any different. it is still the post office afterall.

i have a massive hard on just thinking about this new post office. i can barely contain my excitement. oh dear, now i’ve gone and made a mess of myself, i have.

No retards at new post office…it will be self service machines. Woo!

I think this is a fantastic idea. For people that work and live in the area…it saves time rushing up from Front street to make it to the post office before 6. At least for us 10-6ers. Especially for those that use the post office frequently for ebay send-outs.
