109 Gold St Development Question

109 Gold St site

After Brownstoner reported a stop work order issued by the DOT at the 109 Gold Street site, they were given the green light in June 2008. Then Brownstoner revisited the site yesterday on the 7 story, 33 unit project. Incidentally, a DumboNYC reader emailed us:

I live at 99 Gold Street on the south east corner of the building. I have watched for the last year and a half, my next door neighbors tear down a beautiful old church and now they are putting up a residential building. Progress is progress but now they are using a generator next to our windows that is extremely loud and emitting carbon monoxide into our apartment. I have made several complaints to the DEP and have ask the contractor nicely if he would stop running that specific generator. He has completely ignored me and has accused me of yelling at him from my window. Not sure where to turn now to other than the press.

Photos from emailers are below. From another emailer, they are concerned about the fumes not only for themselves but for babies and toddlers in the building. This is NYC and we should all expect construction, but the contractors should be following regulations, no? Other than calling 311 and reporting the generator use during non work hours, what else can the 99 Gold St apartment owners do? Comment below please.

    The car window smasher is back! My car's window was smashed on Adams Street On sat in daylight. Police say it's happening more and more around DUMBO again

    Question: was it just my imagination or did anyone else hear loud gunfire around 5:30 this morning 3/7? It continued intermittenly for about half an hour--obviously the same gun. Sounded as though it was coming from the area of Gold and York Streets.

    I live on the first floor, opposite side of that green astroturf-y wall, and let me tell you: Pollution aside, I'm DREADING the erection (he he, I said "erection") of this bldg that will soon turn my apt space (and surely others) into a dim-lit dungeon.

    Alas.
  • The easy thing to do is hop the fence and pour a mixture of sand and sugar in the gas tank. Those generators won't be working for a while.

    I agree with LS. It helps to have a measurable CO level to state your case to 311 or the firemen. Also, if they are doing work during off hours, you should call 311 every time. The city investigates each 311 case called, even if it takes a few days for an officer to show up. Good luck.

    Unfortunately, your only hope is to put your CO detectors near your windows and hope they go off. If they do, call 911. I had a similar problem with a parking lot next to me with refrigeration trucks running their engines all night. I discovered there is no intermediate step between 311, (wait a week for someone to show up) and 911 (immediate response). Firemen like to throw their weight around. They'll measure the CO and probably find not a significant amount but then go down and "suggest" that the contractor move his generators. In my case they actually broke into 2 trucks and turned them off. My favorite kind of justice!
