Dock Street Dumbo Opponents Rally to ‘Save the Brooklyn Bridge”
January 12th, 2009
The Dock Street Dumbo opponents rallied on Sunday to block the development of a proposed 18 story residential building and public middle school. Dumbo Neighborhood Association’s (DNA) message is that they don’t opposing building on the site, which is the right of developers Jed and David Walentas, but don’t agree with a building so tall near the Brooklyn Bridge. They also don’t believe that the benefits of a public middle school, underground parking garage, and a green building can be achieved in the developer’s proposal.
The Community Board 2’s land use committee voted against the project in late December. The full community board will vote on the proposed rezoning on Wednesday, January 14 at 6 pm at Brooklyn Borough Hall (209 Joralemon Street, at Court Street). After that, the project will be submitted for review by the borough president, the Department of City Planning, the City Council, and the mayor’s office. A DNA member estimates that 75 to 100 people came out to the rally.

Again people will do anything to block the construction that will depreciate the value of their property view

Looks like DNA uses the same over exaggeration on their crowd counts as it does on their building renderings.

Joe Developer:
Were you there? I was. And I bothered counting. It was a cold morning, and the rally didn’t last long–about 30 minutes max, but at the time I counted (which is when Councilman Avella was speaking), there were 84 people in attendence (not counting a few from the media).
Why do you feel the need to lie and misrespresent?

Placing a school underneath a known target for terrorists in unconscionable. The idea of a school will never survive a review by the Dept. of Homeland Security. The Brooklyn Anchorage Art Space was shut down for this very reason. The developer is using children to promote his greedy aims. Make no mistake, we are at war, and this ‘good idea’ is an invitation to disaster.
