According to the NY Observer, Nico De Swert, a Belgium floral designer who lives in NYC will open a flower school and shop on Front Street in Dumbo. (The story mentions 81 Front Street, but the flower shop will open on the corner of Washington Street and Front Street at 73 Front Street, as first reported by Brownstoner in October 2008. We’re clearing the facts with Two Trees and will update post.) Nico De Swert is apparently a celebrity in the world of flower arrangement. Celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and Valentino have turned to Nico De Swert for his artistic designs. His arrangements are featured in magazines such as Martha Stewart Living, The Oprah Magazine, and InStyle. In keeping with the Dumbo art culture, his work challenges people “to see flowers and plants in a new light: as a medium for creating art,” according to The Flower Expert. Mr. De Swert has signed a 10-year lease for 6,600 square feet space.

Speaking of celebrities, anyone else notice a lot more celebrities in Dumbo lately? I’ve seen so many in Dumbo lately. I saw Tyra Banks eating at Bubby’s on Sunday. I wouldn’t mind if Leonardo hung out.

Oh god, somebody should have stopped her. Now she’s going to think of the horrible food she had while visiting our otherwise kick ass hood.

Wow, a flower school and shop–now that’s an unexpectedly fun and creative thing to have in our neighborhood. Imagine walking by, and breathing in the smell of all those flowers? Maybe I’ll be inspired to buy my wife more peonies. Now let’s fill the other 4-5 storefronts with equally unexpected ideas…
