A pet supply store on 61 Pearl Street in Dumbo, NYC Pet, looks to be opening soon. They join other pet related businesses Dumbo Pet Care, Cheeky Dog, DiDi’s Dog Boutique, and Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group in Dumbo. Please comment below if you’ve had experience with NYC Pet.

My wife and I stopped in over the weekend. Looks like a great place – tons of merchandise, friendly, knowledgeable staff. I’m pretty sure there is another location in Park Slope.
Great addition to the neighborhood!

Hey all, it’s me, the Mikey’s Hook-Up disser that everyone hated on for saying M’sHU was a waste of space. It totally is, btw — a waste of space, that is (store is 100% empty day and night, even tho everyone couldn’t wait to get their new USB cables there) — but that’s a story for another posting. Now, again, with yet another pet store, I have to ask — WTF? Seriously, another pet store? Come on. Surely you M’sHU defenders cannot defend this one. One pet store for a neighborhood this size is MORE than sufficient. We need other stuff!!! But I’m sure tons of people are about to disagree with that opinion. Bring it on, ding dongs!

Another pet store showed up on it’s own. It’s not as though everyone else in the neighborhood is working against you to bring in shops that are redundant or contrary to your interests.
Perhaps you could start working with the Dumbo Neighborhood Association, or start lobbying Walentas, to see if there is anything proactive you can do to help entice “valid” businesses to open shop over here. Or just continue whining charmlessly. Whatever makes you feel better.

Agreed with you there. The problem with M’sHU is that is just a nice walk over the bridge away from J&R … although I liked the idea of the store, I havent needed to go in there yet. I give the new pet store a few months before they realise they wasted their money moving here. I hate to sound like a hater, but diversity is going to be a key part of developing Dumbo as a shopping destination.

Maybe I’m speaking for a minority, but I haven’t been very impressed with the pet stores already in DUMBO, except the vet. I love them. Maybe it’s because I have cats and not dogs. Does anyone know if this new store has more cat supplies than the others? It would be nice to have somewhere I can pick up cat litter and cat food so I can stop ordering it.

I haven’t been in the new store yet, but I’m looking forward to checking it out. Dumbo Pet Care and Cheeky Dog primarily offer other services (daycare, boarding, grooming), and only have a few supplies. DiDi’s products all seem focused on little mini dogs. I can’t get the majority of supplies I need at any of them, so I find myself going to Petco in Union Square for almost all my supplies or buying online. Hopefully, this new business will have a wider selection of supplies.

Pet’s are really picky with what they eat.I know from experience. So to have a store that has a large variety of food and supplies I think is incredibly useful. Thy even told me they’ll order and keep in stock anything they don’t currently have. As far as Mikey’s. I couldn’t be more happy with them in the neighborhood. They fixed my Laptop for free under my Apple Warranty and saved my files I thought I lost. They even carry my guitar strings I found out when I was buying some Pro audio cables for my home studio. It’s saved me hours of time I would have had to spend in Manhattan. Mikey’s is so different then J&R. I really don’t understand how you could even compare. When I want to by a TV or Stereo system I’ll go to J&R. When I need to buy a new Apple computer , get one fixed ,buy supplies for my Pro-Tools recording setup I’ll go to Mikey’s. It’s kind of a no brainer.

I have to order or carry in all my cat supplies from Brooklyn Heights. I hope this place has a better selection for cats. We need a real pet supply store. Not a boarder, walker or specialty shop.

agreed. This is an actual pet supply store, where you can get regular ol’ dog food and cat food, etc.–not a boarder or specialty place with only a few overpriced offerings. This neighborhood could USE a place like this–it is far from redundant.

I’ve been using the NYCpets store on Clark Street in the Heights since it opened this summer. It’s got a good selection and fair prices.

How about more restaurants? The selection is dire w/o anything of real quality. And a flower shop! That is what I want, as well.

Hey newbie, there was a flower shop on washington street where the TT RE office is now, but it closed because nobody gave a sh*t. You should have moved here earlier, maybe you could have saved it.

Thanks to Landmarks we’re not going to see any restaurants done here for a long time. If you have a kitchen you have to vent to the roof.That is expensive. If this wasn’t Landmarked you could vent out the front, much cheaper and a lot easier for a start up with a small budget. Superfine is the only place that was able to build a new vent in an existing internal stairway. It’s not entirely kosher, bites off a little too much space on some of the floors, but it passed. That was at least 10 years ago. the only other way to get a resturant is take over an existing restaurant with ventelation systems grandfathered in. You can count those on one hand. Look forward to an Applebee’s or Olive Garden. They have the deep pockets.

I apologize in advance for going slightly off topic, as the above post concerned NYC Pet, but does anyone have a preference between Dumbo Pet Care and Cheeky Dog for dog day care? I’m moving to Dumbo next weekend and would appreciate any opinions. (If there’s a better place to post this, please let me know.) Thanks in advance.

A third option: Monstermutt on Warren Street (between Court and Smith). It’s a bit of a walk from DUMBO (1.5 miles) but is steps away from the Bergen St. F train stop.

My dogs go to Cheekydog for boarding and for daycare 1 day a week. They love it there, and Chelle (owner) is great. It is the first boarding place I’ve ever used (and I’ve tried a bunch) where I can actually relax when I’m away, knowing my pups are in good hands.

I’ve never used Cheeky but my dogs have been going to DUMBO Pet Care for awhile now for daycare and boarding. They walk them sometimes too. I’ve never had a problem and they always go the extra mile (they live in DUMBO and picked up my dogs at night after hours during a snowstorm when I went into labor last year). I dunno, they were the first ones here and I think they’re the best but I really don’t know the other lady. With small dogs, I’d DEFinitely go to DPC.

I highly recommend Cheeky. Great space for the dogs, really nice owner, great staff. We’ve used them for both daycare and boarding and have been very happy. My dog LOVES it there. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Now, sorry for going way off topic (again I don’t know where else post this), but does anyone know how to get in touch with someone at the two unstaffed outdoor lots on Front St (I believe one is near Main and the other is near Jay)? I’m guessing they offer fairly cheap off-street monthly parking.

JB, the lots you mentioned are owned by Jehovas Witnesses and are for their private use. There is an outdoor lot on Washington Street near the Brooklyn Bridge, but I’m not sure how much cheaper it is than monthly indoor parking rates in the neighborhood. Indoor parking runs about $300 a month over here.

JB, call Two Trees and ask to speak to someone about parking. They own/manage two lots with assigned spots on Front st — i believe there are waiting lists for both though.
