with reference to saving the cobblestone streets, why can't the City impose a $2,000 or $5,000 or $10,000 surcharge on the production companies that take over our neighborhood on a regular basis to preserve the neighborhood and ensure that it remains "filmworthy?" The "neighborhood preservation fee" can be on a sliding scale which is pegged to the size of the production. Believe me, these productions are so big that $5,000 or $10,00 is a drop in the bucket for them. It could, however, mean alot to the neighborhood. Just sayin'

V H and Daddymack, Why encourage film companies shooting here in the first place? It is a major inconvenience, and other then the novelty of seeing some star standing around it grows old rather quickly. Film production benefits very few of us in the actual neighborhood. Landmarks already puts a burden on landlords to keep it "old school" which ultimately gets passed to tenants in increased rents. What would we do with the “neighborhood preservation fee”? Put up wooden signs advertising blacksmiths and barrel makers? Maybe we could have a Dumbo wardrobe department where the locals could wear period costumes so they wouldn't have to wait 10 min. to cross through a film shoot.

Funny how all of the vandalism happens near the industrial side of DUMBO where all of the artists still reside.

Hey, if the money is right, I would wear a period costume and pretend to be a blacksmith. But seriously, the filming/tape/photo types will be here no matter what the locals want. And as NYC loses jobs from other sources you can be sure that the Mayor's office is going to throw more energy into growing the film/TV industry. We need taxpayers to pay for stuff. DUMBO should try to get more out of the deal.

VH, my point is that the filming is detrimental to the neighborhood. There is no way the city can allocate money to Dumbo based on how much filming is done here. Can you imagine what a pain it would be if filming was done here 24/7? If you are so underemployed that the $100 they pay for background dogs motivates you to put on pantaloons then you are the exception. I for one don't get out of bed for less than $200 a day.

I agree that filming can be detrimental to parking problems, or say, access to a street or store when they won't let you thru. Last week I was prevented from walking through Cadman Plaza. But overall the film industry adds jobs, and it increases tourism, which also creates jobs and needed revenue for the City.
The City issues permits for filming in specific neighborhoods. They could take a fee and then use it for specific projects in the neighborhood. Its not increasing the filiming, only getting something more for the residents who have to deal with it.

I hear smokey works at front street now. He kneeds the pizza dough in the basement. No wonder their pizza has been tasting so much better with all the extra oregano. Green hat I haven't seen in the neighborhood I wonder what happened to that perp. crackey I think is now a model in tribeca.

another shooting outside ferragut, this time at 11:30am on a sunday! at least four shots fired, 99 gold residents watching from their balconies as the gunman made his way down york street guns pointed in the air. it's almost comical how often this happens...and yet a block away on front street people still walking their dogs like nothing's going on.

Scary way to start the day. I stepped out of the building seconds before those shots were fired. You are right 99gold, there were many people coming and going, and no one even flinched at the sound of gunfire. I returned to the building 20 min later to police interviewing witnesses....anybody have any other info?

it will calm down with the winter coming..but next spring should be interesting....no more staunch defenders of dumbo saying "crime is not an issue in dumbo"

Last night turned out to be another big night of gunfire. many more shots fired this time. 3am. Twice in one week,wow.

The same thing happened last weekend at 2am in the wee hours of Saturday morning. 10 shots fired. We called 911 and the police showed up at our doorstep for more information almost immediately.

There is no system for safeguarding Farragut from the residents who are not law-abiding. Even though NYCHA housing rules state that people who have committed certain crimes will be evicted. There are no guards, no cameras and the locks are routinely kicked in on the front doors. It's not right -- particularly not for the law-abiding residents at Farragut who must feel terrorized by a lot of the stuff that goes on over there.

it was a warm day yesterday...really not surprising that cops can't do much to stop this. farragut and those thugs who it attracts can't be contained unless that place is torn down
