Considering 1 main is a 2.5 mil condo, those people live worse than college students…crap bed, tv on the floor. Money really doesn’t buy class…
August 30th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
I’d say that class is about being comfortable with who you are
August 31st, 2008 at 12:44 am
Wow, great, every time you turn up on this site, you’re like a little black cloud!
You may not like the seller’s taste and staging, but I can tell you that those kitchen stools aren’t cheap, (even though Ikea has ripped them off). They’re Alvar Aalto, and they run about $500 a piece. However, that’s not to say that having spendy furniture = having class. Class, as you’ve used the term, is determined by one’s grace in word and deed, not by one’s possessions.
Serious buyers will be looking at the apartment’s bones, it’s proximity to the park, and the waterfront view. I’ve never seen an apartment that I’d want to buy based upon the way it’s furnished. Taste is just too personal.
September 1st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
and the owners (no, not me) rent it out so it only reflects the tenant’s taste.
September 2nd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
well, if you are going to sell it then stage the place better. not saying having fancy furniture=class. saying presenting yourself well = class.
btw, good luck selling these with the crime. Before, news of crime in dumbo was only reported on this site, now everyone and their mother hears about the break ins and muggings. catching one thug is not going to solve the systematic problems in dumbo.
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I completely agree with great!!! What a tacky, tasteless interior. Besides, named-dropping Alvar Aalto and putting the $500.00 price tag is the epitomy of lack of taste. You can add in a $5000.00 Citterio furniture, your place would still look ugly. The place still looks horrible it reminds me of a dorm room in East Germany!
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
I’m not the owner of the apartment. I live in Vinegar Hill. I happen to know about those stools because I am a furniture designer. Who cares how this apartment is furnished? The seller is exposing the interior of their apartment to sell the apartment, not so jerks can comment on how it’s furnished. What’s wrong with you?

Lots of people gripe about crime and report incidents here, but great seems to be the only person who always whines about how crappy Dumbo “is”.
Any buyer in the age of the “internets” is going to do their due diligence and wind up on this website after a simple Google search. This isn’t some private, hidden message board for residents only. If great didn’t protest so much — too much? — about living here, I would guess that she he or she was trying to drive prices down.
September 2nd, 2008 at 5:55 pm
@ Neighbor: you are right. This is a small neighborhood, and a somewhat well-kept secret. We need to keep it stinky to keep the prices down. I’m with “Great” and I whole heartedly support Cracky and Smokey, too. Also, I hope your car window gets smashed.
That is why our residents pay two thuggish homeless people named, Cracky and Smokey to harrass people and intimidate new arrivals from there visible perch at Washington and Front Streets. Each day we give them money to keep them stinking the neighborhood up.
That is why our local businesses (P&P, Cheeky Dog, Bridge Apoth, etc.) hire them to litter our neighborhood and encourage their behavior. Without thugs like Cracky and Smokey working to balance out Dumbo’s convenience, spectacular views, and charm, demand would skyrocket, and so would the real estate prices.
Thank you Cracky and Smokey, you stink up our neighborhood like a giant cloud of real-estate dampening flatulence. Yes, I will have some change for you on my way out. Heres a few bucks, God bless, you too Cracky.

Why must blogging always resort to being so negative?
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
never said i like the crime and smokey & cracky bs – just pointing out the reality of living in dumbo. Why does presenting facts always equal being negative?
I was going to buy but stayed renting as I saw the writing on the wall. Lot of supply, tight credit markets, big crime increase, and lack of amenities. The are so many empty storefronts for such a small neighborhood it really is a drag. I honestly thought the neighborhood was going to get better but the complete opposite has occured.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:16 am
Hey Easybaby. How ya doin? Me and my pimp Smokey are going to keep it that way. With our begging and Smokey’s threats, we’re tryin real hard to keep those storefronts empty. Fewer stores means you HAVE to shop at least every once in a while at Peas n Pickles, and that means you HAVE to walk the gauntlet and more money in our pockets.
Thank you, God bless.

In related news: a drifter/panhandler/drugdealer (sound familiar?) killed a 19 yr old in Chelsea over the weekend.

How long are Dumbo residents going to put up with these people? Am I the only one that cares?
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Stop your whining and move to the burbs already. It’s the reality of living in a big city.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Big city, but small neighborhood Mr. Anon.
I don’t think the only choice we have is between either putting up with predatory pimp/drug dealers or moving to the suburbs. In a small neighborhood with intelligent, progressive-minded neighbors, like ours, we have do have the choice to stand up to two destructive and unwanted criminals.
I know I am not the only one, and my neighbors will join me to put an end to this ugliness. Thank you.

I think you misunderstood my post, easybaby. Crime in Dumbo is no secret. The recent news coverage is a good thing. great was asserting that local crime was only ever covered on this site, as if the readers of Dumbo and Vinegar Hill consist only of people who have already bought over here. (I read this site and others with great interest before I decided to move here.)
great, thank you for sharing that you are a renter. It explains your frustration with the immediate state of affairs in the neighborhood. If you were an owner, I believe you would have more of an investment in this area, and perhaps you’d be working to effect change (assuming here that you’re not) rather than griping on this site.
Neighborhood crime is not a secret, nor should it be. But I’d like to know what some of the biggest complainers are doing (if anything) to help make this neighborhood safer. I’m doing what I can, and hope many other residents — renters and owners — are too. I totally agree that the window smashers, and the panhandlers have got to go, particularly Green Shirt and our local drug dealers out in front of Peas & Pickles.
Concerned Parent, you lost me before when you’ve posted the old story about the Times Square needle stabbing, but this time I agree with your reasons for posting the drifter link. Too many people in the neighborhood treat the local panhandlers like they’re harmless, and we’ve recently learned that at least one certainly is not. Yet he (Green Shirt) continues to drift through the neighborhood 24/7. At this point, a little more street smarts and a lot more action from the community is needed.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Sounds like you’re just advocating to move this to someone else’s backyard where it will be their problem and not DUMBO’s. Smokey and Cracky might go but they’ll just be replaced by someone else soon enough. It’s never going to be the seemingly sterile environment you’re hoping for.
As for putting an end to the ugliness, I’ve seen lots more bitching and moaning for a couple years on the site than I have results.

DUMBo YUPPY WISHLIST FALL 2008:
- Arrest lovable, harmless, LOCAL homeless couple because they said “shit” in front of Dylan.
- Floodlight and place surveillance camera in all area streets to save our BMWs and Mini Coopers from vagrants.
- Stop the drug dealers from selling pot, little Dylan might buy it soon to balance out his Ritalin (Seriously, !!! What about the CHILDREN?!?!?… besides my husband gets his blow by delivery, and I’m prescribed Xanax)
- Replace affordable, lovably run-down, and cool local restaurant in Vinegar Hill with expensive faux-run down Freemans spin off.
- Fill in vacant storefronts with the following:
1. Pottery Barn Kids
2. Banana Republic
3. Starbucks (no, we can’t wait for those lattes)
4. Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, etc. a la Soho and Bleecker St.
- Route those noisy subway trains over some other bridge (Williamsburg maybe? isn’t that brooklyn too?, we just moved here from Chicago and miss the peaceful midwest)
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Dear “Die Yuppie Scum”:
- The “lovable, harmless, LOCAL homeless couple” you refer to does not exist. They are not lovable and further not local. They are annoying at least. At worst they are a severe nuisance. They also commute here . . . meaning that they commute from somewhere. Thereby they are not homeless.
- If you are referring to Pedro’s as a “affordable, lovably run-down, and cool local restaurant,” I don’t get your point. It is justifiably sketch. If people don’t want to eat there, so be it.
- DUMBO has had a Starbucks for years. Deal with it. It is just like the rest of the city, but with fewer of them. There are a bunch in BH/downtown. We also have a numerous other locals to get coffee any freakin’ way we require it served by independent purveyors.
- I am not from Chicago, but I have nothing against Chicago. I am only annoyed by your heavily slanted strawman attempt at humor.
- I have an idea. Instead of spending you time ripping on some of the people who live here, why don’t you shift your attention to the tourists. You can give some directions to people looking for that “pizza place that is famous.” I am sure that they will love you warm demeanor.

Ha! I love it. Take a blog break, and all this craziness comes out. Anon and my other smart, reasonable, dumbo neighbors, I’ve said it before – The yupppie scum commenter and all other “good-old-days-crime-ridden-hood-preservationists” have less and less support.
I imagine that the last of them will be hanging on for years, but really Dumbo is becoming more and more of a luxury, Tribeca-type neighborhood every minute.
Cracky + Smokey and other crime is still a problem. It won’t happen overnight, but police resources will catch up with the sudden changes to this area eventually.
Keep asking your neighbors to stop supporting the dynamic dumbo duo (btw LOVED the Stinkin’ up dumbo comments) – no more dollars. And most importantly, keep applying pressure to local businesses to address the issue. They have to understand that Cracky and Smokey directly and negatively impact their business and the neighborhood as a whole.
I love this neighborhood, let’s hope that Fall ’08 brings good things to D.U.M.B.O.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Crackey and smokey need to go.
Green shirt guy needs to go.
Cane dude needs to go.
Tall skinny dude with cup need to go.
crack head bitch with shopping bags at york st station need to go.
dressed nice skinny dude with glasses needs to go.
car window smashers need to go.
DUMBO will then be great neighborhood.

Great- What DUMBO do you live in? I could go on and on and on about all the great spots in the neighborhood (the General Store, Rebar, Powerhouse), our awesome and expanding park (witness the hundreds who gathered last week to watch a great film in a stunning setting), the new and expected amenities (the apothecary, the liquor store, Choice Market, Mikey’s Hookup), the many wonderful neighbors I have met that I now call friends, but frankly, I am too busy enjoying this great neighborhood. Honestly, Great, it sounds to me like you are either bitter because you couldn’t actually afford to buy here or you are just an unhappy, negative person who can’t see the positive side. I immediately loved Dumbo when I moved here 3 years ago, and I love it even more now. I know a lot of people who feel the same.
Crime is a fact of life in all parts of this great city (not that we should just “put up with it or move to the suburbs” as some so ridiculously suggest), but the difference in Dumbo is that people care enough about this neighborhood to actually do something about it. And it is a small enough of a community to have a discussion like this.
And let’s get one thing straight, once and for all, Smokey and Crackey are NOT homeless. They are not harmless. Drug use and dealing always has the potential to put people in danger. And it does not mean we want a “sterile” environment just because we don’t find drug dealers and panhandlers charming.
And all you “yuppies must die” people on this blog… do you have any idea how stupid you sound? Most of the supposed “yuppies” who live in Dumbo are NOTHING like what you describe.
And lastly, Pedros may be cheap, but it is awful. The food is disgusting. End of story.

Those who actually know Dumbo see the continual development and progress of the neighborhood. The few empty storefronts are a result of development not prior tenants leaving. As the neighborhood grows, new fronts are created where previously the walls were brick. This is called progress and a path to offering more services for our small community.
When I first moved here 90% of what are now ‘storefronts’ were brick walls. The neighborhood continues to come into its own, and crime is a part of it. All told, the crime in Dumbo is really minimal compared to other areas of the city.
September 4th, 2008 at 7:56 am
Dumbo is already a great neighborhood, with or without panhandlers. It has a unique historic character, and we’re lucky to be on the waterfront with an inviting park that people from all 5 boroughs come to. Regardless of the “yuppy scums” vs the “old timer” rants on this blog, we are part of one community. In ‘real life Dumbo’, I’ve never encountered such negativity between residents. I think we can be respectful of eachother’s viewpoints online as well.
As for the crime, it’s part of city life. But residents have made a positive out of a negative situation and have looked out for eachother and working with the police to make Dumbo a safer neighborhood. We’ve come a long way when we used to come out of the F station and run back to our apartments hoping not to get mugged.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
never said dumbo didn’t have any amenities, just surprised that there are still so many empty storefronts..doesn’t it strike you as odd that the only way most of these business stay open is that their rent is subsidized by Walentas & Co?
On the positive side, places I think are good.
Hecho en dumbo
Superfine
Five Front (brunch)
Gramaldi’s (takeout only)
To answer how I help crime… I keep my car free of any crap so the thugs aren’t tempted to break in. If thugs don’t see any opportunity they will move on. The problem is so many people in dumbo seem to have never grown up in the city and leave an ipod adaptor as a friendly invitation for a window smash.

Don’t forget the most amazing French bakery in all of NYC — Almondine!

Some memory foam beds can easily solve the problem, but my guess is that the price is little bit high for some people to afford.

I like 1 bedroom condo at 79 Bridge Street #4G .it;s very classic style.
