Dumbo Then and Now: NE Corner of York and Adams Street

The Bar and Grill Park in Dumbo does not have a bar nor does it allow grilling. The green patch is named after Between the Bridges Pub that used to be across the street on the corner of York and Adams Streets. The building that housed Between the Bridge Pub (then 63 York Street), along with two other buildings were torn down in 2004 to make way for the 23 story 85 Adams Street (aka Beacon Tower) condo building. (We followed their progress in 2006.) We’ve found some great photos from Joel, who followed the progress of 85 Adams Street building.

This series is kind of poetic: the old drawing is fading away/washing out just as the old buildings and character of DUMBO do the same.

Between the Bridges, oh how you are missed. The beauty of the old building and bar replaced with forgettable and bland architecture. Cold by any standard, except a beer at Between the Bridges.

Nice series of photos, Joel. I enjoyed seeing the progression from tavern to tall building from such a great vantage point (even though part of me wonders about the 85 Adams architect or builder. For example, why does the finished HVAC covering not align with the building? It hangs out a good 15-20 feet over the northern edge). Hope you are enjoying your Rhode Island retreat. A lake sounds pretty good during August…

This building is SO AWFUL. I liked the between the bridges bar. I love how this new crap building marketed itself as being “Feng Shui” designed! What a load of crap! and the “Zen meditation garden” right underneath the Manhattan Bridge with the subway ROARING overhead – hahahahahaha come on!!!

Before the bar was named “Between the Bridges Pub”, it was called “Haggerty's” after my Grandfather Jack Haggerty. He bought the bar and adjuring buildings sometime in the 1930's. It remained in the family until the 1960's. Many a tale could be told of the goings on in Haggerty's during those years of war, rebuilding and finally the demise of the old Brooklyn waterfront.

Those buildings should have been landmarked. It's a shame.
