Water Street Art Vandalized

Only three weeks after the Concrete Alchemy collaborative painted the Water Street wall, it was vandalized by presumably a rival person or group. White paint was splashed over the street art with the black spray painted words “Treat others how you want to be treated!” We don’t know the back story, but it’s too bad that this skillful street art is ruined by a few splashes of paint. The paint doesn’t have the characteristic large splatters of the infamous splasher, but who knows.

and so the great graffiti wars of 2008 begin!

  2. MikeM Says:

I see some big MSK tags over the wall, although I can’t tell if they’re under or over the splashes. Nonetheless, that is the crew of the kids who did the previous mural. While it does look like their style, I should also point out that the last production was dissed with the name of yet another crew. I happen to know that crew and it wasn’t them, so it’s possible this was a forged tag also.

    Who gives a crap!

  4. fatass Says:

here here, laura…who gives a crap indeed. haven’t we more important things to worry about than one graffiti-ist dissing another graffiti-ist? lord, what will be the next great drama facing this neighborhood. dumboers (and i am one of you) take themselves and their neighborhhod WAY to freaking seriously WAY too often. get over it.

  5. annulla Says:

So … which painting was authorized by the owners of the building, and which was vandalism?

  6. great Says:

and the crime continues…. really unfortunate

  7. BrooklynLove Says:

sucks but grafitti breeds grafitti, authorized or not, always has, always will. original work still looks dope.

  8. Danny Eagle Says:

This was a beautiful wall that deserved respect. Shame another graf crew probably did it. If you stand in front of it you can see how much work went into it. And fatass and Laura, you all should care, that was free art in an otherwise lackluster street.

  9. johnson Says:

before blaming the “infamous splasher”, you should read the article you linked to. he or she does not attack this type of graffitti.

  10. loose stool Says:

brooklynlove is right, the very nature of grafitti spawns more grafitti. I was kind of surprised the previous wall wasn’t targeted. I think most grafitti artists are resigned to this. You all should be worried about important things like dog shit smears and recycling cans on the corners. Oh, and the broken window in the liquor store.

  11. JOHNSON Says:

Good for these people. They disrespected going over the previous mural and did a bad job at it!

  12. lindsey Says:

i agree with loose stool…how can street art be effective if it doesn’t, even indirectly, create more street art? i just heard about this movie that’s supposed to be all about street artists and like their explosion in nyc. i just found the website–it’s http://www.beautifullosers.com. can’t wait for it to come to ny!

  13. fratello Says:

My interpretation: these guys liked the previous work by elmac.net and were so pissed off that they vandalized the wall.

  14. dedededede Says:

    WHO FREAKING CARES?

  15. VH Says:

They care, that is why they are writing about it. You on the other hand…you do not care…so why are you telling others what to do.
Go somewhere else if you don’t like it.

  16. toe-knee Says:

hey dedededede, relax… let people make comments

[personally i like the wall better, and i see it everyday]

  17. danny eagle Says:

every time i want to leave a comment i have to use a calculator to get passed the spam protection!

  18. Pete Says:

I cannot believe how many people I saw giving Smokey and Cracky hugs today. What the hell kind of sob story could justify 3+ years of standing outside P&P 7 days a week?

  19. Meghan Says:

I agree and what’s even worse is not one but two businesses in the neighborhood have apparently given them odd jobs of handing out flyers for them. One of those crackheads ignored my declining of the flyer and stuffed one in my bag anyway while I was walking down the street. Come on people, a little professionalism goes a long way. I’ll think twice before patronizing either business now.

    Which businesses?
