With any of these places, if you don't like 'em, go shop there. I'm personally very grateful for the Apothecary because I remember when there wasn't a place to buy shampoo in the 'hood. And while the new liquor store is pretty charmless, the guy there was pretty nice and their prices on hard liquor are great. They have my favorite scotch for $15 less than B&R--which I still love and will still patronize for wine.

If you haven't noticed, there are lots of vacant storefronts still in the neighborhood. We should be grateful people are willing to open businesses here.

blanc et rouge has a nice staff but they price gouge the piss out of us. Not that they're much worse than Henry St. or Atlantic, but they're still worse -haha.

Duane Reed-esq as Apothecary may be, the staff conducts themselves like human beings and seem genuinely appreciative of my business. Their biggest flaw is that they're under-stocked. Actually, they're not much like Duane Reed after all when you think about it...

I'm with anon @ 4:47p. J's just opened and we should be glad that there's a business owner taking a risk and providing residents with more liquor. If you've ever been a small business owner, you know how difficult it is to start and manage a business. One reason for this blog is to support our local small business, so I hope we can give J's a chance. Give them time to get to know Dumbo. I appreciate jokes like Beavis, but on the other hand, can we be a little more positive?

Wow, I love the support for a new local business. Hmm . . . and they just opened less than a week ago. I am glad to see that people are willing to cut people some slack when they are starting out with no income from the business.

Also, God forbid that in NYC there are two (completely legally licensed) liquor stores seperated by numerous blocks! If George Duboeuf is willing to distribute to both stores, does a beaujolais from one taste sweeter than one from the other?

I agree with dumbo resident. the look of the store is terrible. the developers should institute a standards policy, at least for the window displays. Something that prohibits patterned, corrugated cardboard and smiley faces. Is that too much to ask?

damn these developers and their new-fangled changes! Rapscallions and bounders the lot of 'em! I was bad enough when they built those bridges and invaded our streets with their horseless carriages!

Seriously, people - grow the f*** up. Change happens and you only end up looking stupid and small-minded when you complain about it.

the new liquor store is horrendous. I agree that we need more than just a bunch of high end boutiques and furniture stores. But, it doesn't take a lot of effort and money to make a place have some appeal and charm. The liquor store is incredibly tacky and ugly. I hope the owner gets a clue and brings some class to his store.
