Liquor Store Opens on Jay Street
May 20th, 2008
J’s Wine & Spirits has opened at 102 Jay Street in Dumbo. The store looks like it’s more of a liquor store (with wine), than the neighborhood wine store Blanc & Rouge (brwine.com). Anyone had a chance to check out J’s?

I dropped in yesterday. The shelves are less than half full. IMHO, a poor selection of wines and hardly any hard booze yet.
The guy behind the counter didn’t seem knowlegable about wines.
I don’t think Blanc & Rouge has much to worry about at this point.

J Condo seems to be really populating itself with charmless, soulless entities utterly discordant with the neighborhood.
A cookie cutter Chase Manhattan bank branch. A flickering fluorescent lighted Duane Reade-esque drugstore. A liquor store featuring Budweiser and Gallo wine. Ahh, just the atmosphere people flock to DUMBO to enjoy.
But coming from the people who slapped a 33 story building in the middle of low-rise DUMBO, why are we surprised. So hard to create a unique neighborhood, so easy to destroy it.

Just gives another reason for all the degenerate low income project folks to come into dumbo.

Mhmm, got that right. I will continue to shop at Blanc & Rouge myself.

Be careful ‘dissapointed’. Let’s not generalize by pinning the problems on certain groups. Dumbo isn’t a closed off country club, nor would we want it to become one.

Speak for yourself Kat.

Anon - The Chase is ok. Dumbo needed a “major” bank and frankly although I abhor national chains, I love the convenience of it. Chase is the most patronized bank in NYC and it is appropriate for the neighborhood. If the drugstore you’re referring to is Bridge Apothecary, then you’ve got that wrong also - they are hardly “Duane Reade” like - they go out of their way to service their clients, will stock anything you need and have much more variety and higher end brands than any Duane Reade. Blanc et Rouge is wonderful - we’ve relied solely upon their recommendations and have been nothing but thrilled - On the whole we have found Dumbo’s merchants to be more than accomodating - we’ve found they have all gone out of their way to satisfy their neighbors - I really don’t think it can get any better than that - we need to support our local merchants, so they can continue to stay in our neighborhood, not generalize and bash them! After all, it CAN get alot worse! (Can’t speak to the Liquor Store - haven’t been there yet.)

anon@10:27 - are you still mourning the erection of the manhattan bridge and elevated bqe as well? it’s time to get over it and move on.
the convenience of having these stores in the neighborhood is welcome. every store can’t be an overpriced furniture store.

Kat you are a moron. Open your eyes, it’s always the degenerate lowlife scum from the projects that are causing problems within the community.

Personally, I’d love it if DUMBO were a closed-off country club. Who do we talk to about getting a gate installed at Jay and York?
I went into J’s S & W on Saturday and it being their first day open forgave the half-stocked shelves. But to hear that they’re still not stocked…what’s up with that? The store’s like 200 sq ft, I could stock the whole place in half an hour. To their credit, they carry Hendricks.

Its a sad sad day when we complain of more liquor being available.
What is the world coming to?

i’m all for new neighborhood banks, shops, restaurants, but please don’t sell lotto tickets! have waited a really long time in line at the pharmacy and the hardware store while people blow their money on miles of useless tickets.

the new liquor store is horrendous. I agree that we need more than just a bunch of high end boutiques and furniture stores. But, it doesn’t take a lot of effort and money to make a place have some appeal and charm. The liquor store is incredibly tacky and ugly. I hope the owner gets a clue and brings some class to his store.

Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.

damn these developers and their new-fangled changes! Rapscallions and bounders the lot of ‘em! I was bad enough when they built those bridges and invaded our streets with their horseless carriages!
Seriously, people - grow the f*** up. Change happens and you only end up looking stupid and small-minded when you complain about it.

Beavis, took me a minute, LOL

I agree with dumbo resident. the look of the store is terrible. the developers should institute a standards policy, at least for the window displays. Something that prohibits patterned, corrugated cardboard and smiley faces. Is that too much to ask?

Wow, I love the support for a new local business. Hmm . . . and they just opened less than a week ago. I am glad to see that people are willing to cut people some slack when they are starting out with no income from the business.
Also, God forbid that in NYC there are two (completely legally licensed) liquor stores seperated by numerous blocks! If George Duboeuf is willing to distribute to both stores, does a beaujolais from one taste sweeter than one from the other?

I’m with anon @ 4:47p. J’s just opened and we should be glad that there’s a business owner taking a risk and providing residents with more liquor. If you’ve ever been a small business owner, you know how difficult it is to start and manage a business. One reason for this blog is to support our local small business, so I hope we can give J’s a chance. Give them time to get to know Dumbo. I appreciate jokes like Beavis, but on the other hand, can we be a little more positive?

disappointed when I figured it out and realized there really isn’t “poker in the rear”!
illegal gambling den would do a lot for our street cred.
May 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm
mike d, It’s “poker HER in the rear”, you moron! Jeez! Just in case you still don’t get it, “Licker HER in the front”.I think your “street cred” is back to zero.
May 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
thanks prof for the lesson but I did get it. street cred… still zero.

blanc et rouge has a nice staff but they price gouge the piss out of us. Not that they’re much worse than Henry St. or Atlantic, but they’re still worse -haha.
Duane Reed-esq as Apothecary may be, the staff conducts themselves like human beings and seem genuinely appreciative of my business. Their biggest flaw is that they’re under-stocked. Actually, they’re not much like Duane Reed after all when you think about it…
May 25th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
With any of these places, if you don’t like ‘em, go shop there. I’m personally very grateful for the Apothecary because I remember when there wasn’t a place to buy shampoo in the ‘hood. And while the new liquor store is pretty charmless, the guy there was pretty nice and their prices on hard liquor are great. They have my favorite scotch for $15 less than B&R–which I still love and will still patronize for wine.
If you haven’t noticed, there are lots of vacant storefronts still in the neighborhood. We should be grateful people are willing to open businesses here.
