Actually, I was writing in the early 80's when most of these people were toddlers. I grew up in South Brooklyn and would write in DUMBO before it was called DUMBO, before most of you even moved to NY. To me it was a right of passage, i wrote from ages 13-18. My crew found a hatch at the foot of Furman street (know where that is?) where we would walk the tracks from high street to East Broadway (having to time it so we didnt get crushed by the trains), We would go into the City Hall and Canal street lay ups, risking other crews, work bums, and police. All this mind you, when I was a minor. My black books show it, my photo albums show it, i have no need to prove anything to you "cyber fanboys". Keep believing you're down. The fact that there is scafolding and its during the day proves its legal, and saying you're "pretty sure" they have paid their dues (in all caps no less) makes you look unsure and silly. Obviously this site doesnt have the appreciation for the true history of Graffiti like, say "thestreetsaresayingthings.com, zephyrgraffiti.com, or at149thst.com" look it up kids, learn something. Oh, and when I wrote, no one called it "Graff" thats like saying "lets go get a brew and order some za" straight up suburban speak.I was part of Graffiti when it was real, have fun with the commercialized version, you're too late, its all been done before, by people much younger.

if it looks like graffiti, smells like graffiti walks like graffiti, and quacks like graffiti it probably is graffiti. How are we to know it was done legally or not? In actual fact it probably is illegal. LPC would never give a permit to paint that in a landmark district. In this case the landlord is aiding and abetting a crime.

Grafitti is illegal, and the fact that there's risk involved, gives it more outlaw respect. When done legally, its simply art that's grafitti derived or in the style of graffiti. Why wouldnt it look nice?, they were able to take their time, soak up the sun and relax. try doing that on a train in a yard you just broke into in the middle of the night with no lights, THATS graffiti. Half the "kids" doing graffiti these days are in their late 20's early 30's and picked it up in art school.

Not sure if anyone's posted this, but I walked past the mural at 10am this morning and it's been vandalised. Some mindless moron splashed paint all over the entire mural. It makes me sick to think there's people around here who would do something like this.

i don't want to knock the artists for their work, but whoever made the call to go over the old mural is wack.

to keith: obviously, you got no clue talking about the old mural being "dingy and typical". do the research homie.
