I dated a location manager for one of these big studios and she told me that it's unnecessary most of the time for the film shoots to utilize so many vehicles and PA's, but they only do it because it makes for early publicity of the film. Even if some people were inconvenienced, she said they still go to see if the film is worth inconveniencing people for. So the best thing to do when their PA's are jerks (and PA's are ALWAYS jerks) or when their vehicles take up YOUR parking space or if you're towed for parking in the spot you always park in - BOYCOTT the finished film!

"The Taking of Pelham 123" staff violated to Mayors Office of Theater and Film since they did not provide the required 24 hour posting notice. They started putting up the Friday night-Saturday morning notices at 10AM on Friday. If you are towed, you may well want to file a claim with their insurer and also with the Mayors office. Regarding the movie, "The Taking of Pelham 123" it was only a so-so movie in 1981, and by todays standards, is very dated and represents a crime ridden period which no longer exists. There should be a system to reject films and also to compensate the general public for the filming in any particular neighborhood, as so many other cities provide countrywide and world wide.

The "Business Improvement District" purports to have community interests at heart. But if any of you have attended the lavish seasonal parties it throws, looked at its sources of income and large operating budget, or reviewed who is on its board of directors, you will realize it is an organization owned, operated, and paid for by the most notorious area real estate developers.

As a developer its much easier to advance your agenda undercover as some sort of community org than directly under your own name.

It's criminal they have started usurping film shoot donations that used to routinely go to the DUMBO Neighborhood Association (a real neighborhood org totally run by local activist volunteers) that fought for years to landmark DUMBO against BID opposition.

Up until recently, DNA and FFLA would receive a modest donation from film shoots in our neighborhoods. But now, with the tacit approval of CB2 and the Mayor's Office for Film, the location managers are directed to give a check to the DUMBO Improvement District. That's right--community associations that rely on the film money for their funding now are shut out as the DID, which is funded by every commercial property and condo owner in DUMBO, gets fatter. And make no mistake- the DID is looking out for the commercial owners, not the residents of DUMBO. Example? Look at the parking rule changes on Front Street. Two hour parking restriction where before there was only a Monday or Tuesday alternate side. Makes West Elm and very few other car destination stores happy, but forces more residents to use the parking lot owned by Walentas (whose buildings are approx half of the assessed properties in the DID). And the police have been having a field day ticketing up and down Front Street lately, surprising those who think that a meter or muni-meter is a requirement before a ticket is issued.

I'm curious to know if one of our local organizations can extract some money from these film shoots like the Soho Alliance does over in Soho. They also can limit the amount of permits. I think early on the Alliance would send cadres of people with camera flashes to night time shoots. Some these hot shot directors were on their knees. Maybe we should organize. I have 19,000+ws Speedo with a portable generator.
