Dumbo NYC

Notes from the DUMBO, Brooklyn NY neighborhood

J's Wine and Spirits

A wine store is planned in the space next to Bridge Apothecary at 102 Jay Street. According to The Real Deal, the NYC real estate publication, the 1004 square foot retail store, is being leased by J. Wines and Spirits and signed a 10 year lease in April 2007. According to the sign on the door, there will be an opportunity for public comment on Wednesday, December 19, at 10am at the State Liquor Authority (full liquor board hearing) at 317 Lenox Ave, NYC, NY 10027, 5th floor.

Another wine store? Blanc & Rouge on Washington is a great store with a nice selection and knowledgeable staff. We don't need another wine store.

Where are all the restaurants?? I am getting bored of our limited choices in DUMBO (limited even more by the fact that my husband and I are vegetarian), and there are a ton of empty retail spaces that would be perfect for a restaurant.

Just saw a sign for a flower shop opening on Front Street next to reBar.
  • you're funny
I agree with amanda...I live on Jay St and will still shop at Blanc & Rouge. I like the store and have been shopping there for years.

I'm tired of the lack of food options as well. FYI - Jimi's added a full chinese menu with delivery and it has been really good so far.

Not sure why a neighborhood that has 3 grocery stores, 3 baby/kid stores and several petcare shops can't handle 2 wine/liquor stores.
  • low bmi
I thought Blanc & Rouge was quite sufficient for the neighborhood. I suppose the new place will do well. I'd hate to see B&R's business fall off because of it, such nice people. A real neighborhood shop...but that's just how it goes.

Maybe we all benefit from the competition with cheap booze!

fwiw, a wine shop and a liquor store are different, even if the liquor store may be stocking wine. i agree with all commenters re: restaurants, it needs to be stepped up down here.
  • you're funny
B&R carries liquor and wine, delivers, the store has character, and they've been serving the neighborhood for years. I have no problem with the newbies moving in, maybe I'll shop there occassionally. I support local businesses, just wish more food related ones were here to support instead of near duplicates of what we already have.

Ah sweet liquor, take the pain away...
B & R will be fine. Its a well run place. Already has its fan base. But where's my gin? My icy cold desert dry martini with a twist?
Nothing wrong with the liquor store. Welcome to the neighborhood.
I also agree that more restaurants and bars would be great but that location doesn't seem like a restaurant kind of spot.

i need a place where i can satisfy my mad dog cravings. this place looks promising. but please no neon sign.

also looking forward to something open late, adding light/activity to the block after hours.

anyone concerned about shakeouts from farragut? hate to assume the worst, but...
  • Spooner
The comment about farragut was totally not necessary. Everyone speaks about mo and pops....Is J's Liquor a chain or is it also an independent trying to meka living. We have 2 dry cleaners, 3 supermarkets, 2 doggy centers, well two liquor stores: one for the East Dumbo and one for West Dumbo...how about that? Now I just divided the neighborhood in two...East Dumbo Rocks!!!
