Dumbo in Video Games
November 19th, 2007
Our reader Lisa sent us this one, and this is a weird one, but on the first level of the video game, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (Released last week on Nintendo Wii and DS), is set on the Brooklyn Promenade, Brooklyn Bridge park, and Washington street from Front to Plymouth. “By set, I mean they were clearly working from photos which they then animated and added the gameplay on top of… You can clearly see Half Pint and Sovereign bank. Playing a video game set a block from me was an incredibly surprising and disconcerting experience!” Another area you can see is Brooklyn Bridge Park and One Main Street building.

The Dumbo backdrops are pretty photorealistic, down to the street construction cones. I’ve also heard that Dumbo is part of Grand Theft Auto IV, where the set is in a fictitious city called Liberty City and Dumbo is known as “BOABO” (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass). (Screen shot below). See I told you this is a weird one. (Thanks Lisa for the tip!)

They also use a building in Dumbo as the home of the two main characters Jenny and Dan. I don’t remember the name of the building, but its the one in front of 133 water (closer to the park). They have shown a picture of the building in the last two episodes.

The video embed and links are not resolving properly in Macs. I found a clip on YouTube:

Project Gotham Racing 3 uses a fairly detailed 3d model of DUMBO for its NYC race around the two bridges. Unfortunately you don’t really get to drive through the neighborhood, but if you stop on either bridge you can look at it below.
