Bridge Apothecary Opening Very Soon

The anticipated pharmacy (at least by Dumbo and Vinegar Hill residents), Bridge Apothecary, looks like it will be opening shortly. They store shelves looked to be stocked with items and finishing touches were being put in over the weekend.

    Steve - 8 minutes is too far when you're carrying a heavy package or in the middle of winter. Sometimes you can't schedule a pick up and have to go. Oftentimes the post office truck is not here when it's supposed to be and you can't mail anything bigger than the window slot anyway.

    I don't want to go to BH for something as simple as mailing a friggin package, buying stamps, OR buying Q-tips and razors! I pay a LOT of money to live here and expect basic amenities at LEAST. I bet most people who live in DUMBO would agree.

    Totally agree, Rawr. If our longterm plan is to rely on basic services that require an 8-30 minute walk to another neighborhood, then there's a problem. In Manhattan there are post offices within two blocks of each other. Just because some services aren't here yet doesn't mean there isn't a legitimate need for them.

    BTW, I have heard that a post office is supposed to open on or very near to Jay Street.

When I was a boy I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down at the mill, and pay the mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

    The local Post Office to DUMBO is just a few short blocks straight down Washington Street just past the big Courthouse building.
    It takes no time at all to get there. Maybe you are talking about a different Post Office?

    so, maybe this is going to sound odd, but who needs a post office? you can buy stamps anywhere, you get your mail & packages delivered home, you can get a po box (and ship) from that place right next to the bike shop. As far as I'm concerned, a US post office just takes up a lot of space. give me another bar/restaurant/retail.

    Is Dumbo full of Pol Pot wannabes?? Some of these people would see our shiny new condos razed to the ground and the educated middle classes sent to work cultivating rice in the rubble.

    Its progress everyone! You'd have to be smoking one of Crackey's 'specials' not to agree. Bring on the Post Office, the pharmacy and the supermarket. Knock down a few of the older buildings and build an expensive shopping mall. Rename Front St to Starbucks Row. We could even sell the rights to the entire neighborhood ('DUMBO, sponsored by Target').

    To all of you who dread Dumbo turning into the next Tribeca - Tribeca is a great neighborhood, bring it on! If you want to live in squalor, NYC offers plenty of options for you. However, Dumbo is no longer one of them.

    It is not laziness or entitlement to want a post office, a pharmacy, a grocery store, and other very BASIC services in THIS neighborhood. Not in Brooklyn Heights. Not in Cobble Hill. Not just a "short" walk away to SOME OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD.

    Many of us live and work in Dumbo and we're not just going to the post office to mail our ConEd bill or buy stamps. You can't put anything heavier than 13 oz. in a blue mail box these days. It's easy enough to buy postage -- we have our own postage meter -- but when do you drop off your packages? Copywrite is not the answer. They have mailboxes but that doesn't mean they handle mail. They ship UPS. And, they are a private business so they have the right to keep whatever hours they want -- the post office does not close for an extended period of days in a row to observe a religious holiday.

    Keep telling me I'm an a**hole for not wanting to take 1-2 hours out of my day between walking back and forth between Cadman Plaza and waiting in their long, overserved lines simply to drop off a batch of pre-metered packages every week. Keep telling yourself, anon, that all of the new people in this neighborhood are rich, coke snorting, mall loving a**holes simply because we own or rent some of the newer apartments in the neighborhood. Keep telling yourself that and I'm sure you're feel better.

    Another good one! I live and work in DUMBO too and I don't have time to schlep up to that PO nor do I want to deal with those ridiculous lines. A small PO would be fine here, doesn't have to be big.

    Next thing you know these people will expect you to get around via horse and carriage.

    I'd love for one of these idiots to tell me exactly how NOT having a Post Office improves the neighborhood! I'm sure the same people can't wait for crime to get back up to its previous levels and for the streets to be a little dirtier.

    These people should all go buy a small farm in Jersey, start a life of subsistence growing turnips and leave Dumbo to those who are willing to improve it.

    Some of these threads get me so angry I end up walking around muttering to myself. The new vs. old argument is getting very tiresome. Dumbo is changing and I'm sure not all of the change is for the better, but most of it is. I'd rather not see any more big box stores here, but I don't want a neighborhood filled with charming boutiques and no services either.

    I just don't get why so many people are so happy to rely on the infrastructure of other neighborhoods. If we have to go to Brooklyn Heights for its post office, schools, pharmacies, etc. then our neighborhood isn't working. We're not quite big enough for our own PS, but we can easily support a small post office.

    You yuppies should all just leave. We artists have lived in Dumbo for years and never complained about the walk to Brooklyn Heights. Just because you paid inflated prices for your condos, just mean you can dictate the way this neighborhood develops. I'd love to see more establishments like Pedro's.

    Thanks, Hippie, I'm mad enough that I'm spoiling for a fight. My husband and I own a small business. We live and work from our apartment in the neighborhood. I'll bet you're an a**hole.

    But why don't bankers and lawyers belong in this neighborhood, according to you? Who are you to decide what "type" a person is based on what he or she does? How many businesses were located in Dumbo back when it was a serviceless paradise? And who is complaining about Pedro's, btw? Get over yourselves.

    Not sure why you guys are still fighting to be honest.. We have a Starbucks, several chain furniture stores and a Chase branch. Most of the rest of Dumbo is already priced out of your range. Time for you to move on I think, or at least get a proper job.

    I trust most of us can agree we'd like to see more restaurants, more variety a la the LES or Williamsburg.

    Not that any opinion on this site will have an impact on what shows up at Beacon Tower, although perhaps the moderator could convey these opinions to the BID/whomever can woo restaurateurs.

    the J Condo is actively seeking a restaurant for its retail space near the F subway. If you know of a restaurant that wants to open in Dumbo, you should have them contact the J Condo.

    i can't understand how early comers to a neighborhood that didn't even exist 15 years ago can have this misplaced sense of superiority over all who have put down roots since. give me a friggin break. if you don't like the way the neighborhood is changing, then do what you did years ago when coming here (i.e., move) or do something through community channels to mold the type of direction you desire. either way, please spare me the bitter holier than thou rants.

    I am also so sick of this old vs. new argument. I am sure many of the newcomers are not the "horrible yuppies" that the old-timers make us out to be, or even bankers or lawyers (I'm neither), and I am sure many of the old-timers or artists aren't a**holes either. Neighborhoods change. They all do. If you don't like it, then move. And how are the condo prices so inflated when so many people are willing to pay them? I know the prices in my building are already up from when we bought a year and a half ago. This is a great neighborhood and I love living here, as do my neighbors. There is a reason why condos in Dumbo command such a high price (yet still cheaper than Manhattan!).

    There is nothing wrong with a pharmacy or even a post office opening in Dumbo. Not sure why anyone, artist or yuppie or anyone in between, would complain about that.

    I really don't understand why in the eyes of some of the people posting here, just because I moved here in the last two years, I am automatically a horrible, despicable person. Anon and all you others, you know nothing about me. You are the ones that need to "get over yourselves".

    Pedro's sucks, by the way. Sorry, but I had to throw the food out after one bite, it was so bad.

    You know, some of the direction this neighborhood has taken - in terms of retail moving in - has been directed quite painstakingly by Two Trees ( at least for all of their properties).
    This has its Pros and Cons.
    For example, David Walentas has decided he doesn't want any more restaurants. Isn't that nice?
    On the other hand, he does draw the line at chain & big box stores - mostly not allowing them in (Though that doesn't explain West Elm and Bo Concepts...) I would liek to see a nice diner! That makes breakfast - and no more horrible delis with bad fast sushi and an array of lukewarm italian food at the ready 12 hours a day. Yuck.
    And services - yes. Like shoe repair, that woudl be nice.
    When Two Trees is so picky and weird they don't allow for the organic development of community and services to serve it. They created the Peas & Pickles dynasty - ugh.
    There are many small spaces in the older buildings at street level - in my opinion, these small spaces make for the best retail - cafes, bars, tailors, butchers, specialty shops, entreprenuers, etc.
    I hope we get some more business that stay open late enough for people to shop when they get home from work!

    Pedros rocks. Jimi's rocks. I have nothing against the new people, just the new buildings and what they stand for. They do not fit in with everyones desire for "organic development". Many people are not moving into them because they genuinely love the neighborhood and want to plant roots here like the community of people (many of them artists) who have before. They are moving into the neighborhood as an investment (how much $ is your condo worth now?- who cares) and want to change their surrondings in order to maximize their investment. These people (not everyone) are not part of the community that was here before J Condo and want to bring their culture with them.
    The newbies have the money and therefore the control over the future of our neighborhood. It is up to them if they want to keep the neighborhood a artist haven or assimilate it into the greater blah-merica, NYC. IF they resent the artists for being a**holes or hippies, are jealous of the old loft spaces that some of the artists still inhabit, than I guess the writing is on the wall. The artists will stay until they cant afford it anymore and then move on to find the next artist enclave. In the end though, a Bank or a pharmacy or a post office will be a nice convenience for me and my friends and neighbors (as long as we can afford to stay here) and will certainly increase J Condo property values.

    I'm not sure if many of your old timers realize how many of the newbies, even among the condo owners, make their living as commerical artists. There are filmmakers, fashion designers, make-up artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, photographers, illustrators, architects, writers etc. buying properties here -- my husband and I work in a couple these categories. We meet more people in creative fields than not when we're walking around the neighborhood.

    Sure there are people here who have bought solely on an investment basis -- not too much of a stretch for a waterfront neighborhood one train stop outside of Manhattan. And yes, I hope my property value increases -- what owner wouldn't? But I think the majority of the people who are moving here do so because they love the neighborhood and hope to stay for a long time. I know we do. We have a 30 year mortgage, how many of you have a 30 year lease?

    To say that the newbies are simply interested in turning Dumbo into a soulless suburban enclave is both a cop-out and a gross oversimplification of how this neighborhood is changing / who is driving that change. As 'Just Curious...' pointed out, David Walentas, amongst other developers are holding a lot of the cards. If you love this neighborhood and want to protect it, get out there and attend the BID meetings. Slinging mud here isn't going to help your cause, if anything it may cause some like-minded newbies to feel a bit apathetic if the developers ultimately try to push you out.

    You are the people who aren't making enough money. There ARE people who liked Brooklyn because it was Brooklyn. Remember when DUMBO was desolate? (I'm guessing you don't) Some people LIKED that. Some people LIKED having to walk far for amenities, because it meant you had your nice quiet neighborhood.

I _AM_ a success, because I see people making less money than me... and all I had to do was move to a cheaper neighborhood."

    Dumbo is not on the map and gentrifying quickly solely in thanks to the artists who have lived here for the last 15 years. It's true that you (via Walentas) have made this a nicer place to live, but Dumbo would be prime real estate even if this were a toxic, barren dumping ground (like some other upcoming Brooklyn neighborhoods) simply because of its location. You are a prime example of the ugly superiority that gets thrown around on this site -- what makes you think you're better than anyone else because you're an artist? What is your contribution to this community aside from your presence?

    Sorry, I'll get back on-topic. Pharmacies. Artists don't need pharmacies; if they have an illness, they take care of it themselves, say by cutting off an ear to cure tinnitis. (Don't think that works, but nevermind.) Artists don't have health insurance anyhow, so they don't take chances getting sick. They drink lots of echinacea tea, purchased from Peas And Pickles. In Brooklyn Heights.

    I'm happy about the drugstore, looking forward to a PO, could care less about the artists who created that garbage displayed in the park all summer (good riddance), and have lived here for 6 years.

    It was desolate when I moved in, and yeah - I liked it, a lot, but I knew it would not last and as a resident it did suck not having any basic services. The hood has changed greatly in that 6 years and I'm fine with that.

    Maybe I'll buy a Hummer next and drive it around the hood guzzling gas and blasting metal in front of all the obnoxious holier than thou "art" galleries and OLD buildings that I presume these paint brush wielding cretins live in. Yeahhhh....

    Pedros is infested with vermon. They dart about in clear view of patrons. They are absolutely fearless. Of course it USED TO BE a great place to go for a "BOTTLED" beer at $1.50 a pop and I'm talkin premiums... not just Bud... but exotics too! A DOLLAR AND FIFTY CENTS A BREWSKY!!! 7 or 8 years ago I laughed at the mice and rats and even enjoyed a Chimichanga now and then, but it just doesn't make sense anymore. Jimmy's Grocery is the Bomb!!! Support that place forever!!!

Once I have finished making this sculpture of a fish smoking a pipe and riding a bicycle -- formed entirely from used kleenex! -- I shall post a lengthy reply. (I am hoping that my nautical theme will attract the curators of Brooklyn Bridge Park's arts funding program. Say, maybe someone here knows who I can send my CV to?)

They are provocateurs who care far less about a position or a perspective than they do about inflaming (hence the poster's name - a nice hint at a self-awareness that may imply and even more subversive agenda... is this his art?) indignant and outraged posts from others.     It's sad to see such profoundly ignorant and spiteful comments from both (all) sides of the fence here.

    Although there is some admittedly lame art produced/displayed in DUMBO, there's also lots of truly beautiful and compelling art as well - I doubt anyone who spent time visiting open studios during the festival would disagree with this.

    And although there are (apparently) some a**holes with money living in DUMBO, there are also a**holes without money, as well as artists, non-artists and genuinely excellent people with money living here as well - I've met some in all these categories. Money doesn't necessarily make its possessors bad, ignorant or immature - although it clearly doesn't prevent such either.

    Simple concepts, my third grader could understand them. Let's not forget them.

    My experience is that there are far more inferior bankers, inferior lawyers, inferior doctors, inferior architects, inferior television and advertising executives, and inferior real estate developers (not to mention inferior parents and children) than there are inferior artists in Dumbo. This is based on experience. I own a condo here and have had to deal with this endless parade of self-important, know-nothing, wanna-be, never-will-be, suck-up f'ups for close to a decade. And here is the horrible truth about the vast majority of them. They are financially leveraged to their eyeballs, using what little equity they have to pay their kids' college tuition, not to mention the fools who've maxed out their equity to speculate in this market. We'll see how that turns out. It's laughable to see how many "successful architects" have the deeds to their fancy loft apartments in their mommy's name, or their mortgages secured by mommy and daddy's home in East Quoge. Or the "lawyer" who talks a big game but, in reality, is "self-employed" because no reputable firm would ever hire him. As for Dumbo artists, some of the most accomplished artists of the 20th century live and/or work here: Dennis Oppenheim, Vito Acconci, and David Hammons, to name a few. And to the poster who derided the recent sculpture in the park, you are a sycophantic fool who wouldn't know good art if you were impaled on it. What follows is a link to an artist who recently showed in BB Park. His work is structural and monumental. What he does is as difficult as it is accomplished. My guess is you wouldn't have the tenacity (or the muscle) to stretch a canvas, though you're all pretty schooled in stretching the truth.

    the place at Jay and Front makes very good inexpensive sandwiches and salads. they don't offer chi-chi ambiance or designer trinkets but why would anyone need either with a sandwich?

    It looks like work's being done to divide that space. I hope they don't shut down. As others have said, we need more food options in the neighborhood.

    Pedro's is a dump and the place opposite J-condo is possibly the worst 'food option' I've seen since I last watched Fear Factor.

    Ypasfs, you're right, the Ark piece by Richard Watts is incredible. I would guess that it fell into the 2% of work "Art Aficionado" liked. If only we could claim Watts as one of our own, he lives in Toronto.

    I don't believe anyone really thinks that the all of the artists living and working in Dumbo are talentless or a bunch of abstract painting elephants. But the few that post here seem to generate enough bad will that that's where the discussion usually goes... down the crapper into the bowels of comment land where all of the punny "Crackey" and "Smokey" posts reside.

    I really wanted to give the old-timers and artists on this blog the benefit of the doubt, but this thread has proven to me that they are mostly stuck-up, ignorant, idiotic bigots (at least the ones posting here). The over-generalizations they make about the Dumbo residents who are not "artists" are ridiculous. It's amazing to me that people who are supposed to be creative can be so close-minded at the same time.

    I think Vinegar Hill Res put it very well. Many of us are in "creative" fields (not that that matters, I have lawyer and banker neighbors who I adore) and most of us moved here because we love the neighborhood and want to stay for some time. And we are not interested in turning Dumbo into a "soulless suburban enclave", we are simply interested in improving the businesses and services available and the neighborhood as a whole. I could have moved to Manhattan, as I am sure many Dumbo residents could have, but I happen to like Brooklyn and Dumbo in particular.

    By the way, what constitutes "good" art is in the "eye of the beholder".

    And Pedro's food sucks!

    Sara - What does Pedro's lack of interior design (that's what you meant by "dump", right?) have to do with the value and quality of their food? What have you had at D-Space, aka the place at Jay and Front?

    I don't need ambiance or Scandinavian design to go with my under $10 meals.

    I'm well aware of the quality of food available in NYC, thanks. I just don't require white linen tablecloths and a sommelier each time I eat.

    The food in Pedro's is terrible too. thats why it costs about $1 for a whole meal.

    Adam - Try these little experiments any night.

    Experiment 1

    1.Stand by the side window at D-Space (Front St window).
    2.Look at your watch and note the time.
    3.Look into the window at the floor.
    4.Wait (it won't be long) till you see a or several mice sized rodents.
    5. Note the time again.
    6. Report back to this post with your results of how much time went by between step 2 and step 5.

    Pedro's is awful. Went there for the first time a few weeks ago after hearing some positive comments. My wife ordered the veggie burrito. It contained nothing but rice, beans, lettuce and tomato. Pathetic. My beef tacos tasted so nasty I had to throw them out. As for D-Space, why don't they ever have any merchandise on their shelves? Not sure how they are making enough money to pay their lease. Unless Smokey and Crackey are providing some financial support.

    They're sort of open. I don't know if it's official but the door was unlocked on Saturday and I went in and there were people there setting up. They let me buy a card for a wedding I desperately needed. And they were really nice. They have everything, from "drug store" brand products to really high end salon stuff. And the owner said if there is something you're looking for that they don't have, ask and he'll get it.

    I just wanted to say that Christos & his team recently went way above and beyond for me- at their insistence. I really appreciate how hard they are working to meet the needs of the neighborhood (a rarity these days unfortunately). As a long time Dumbo resident watching the good and bad changes around here- this one is definitely a benefit to the community.

    I've been there about 12 times, and they're well-stocked and know their stuff. Plus they're friendly. I just want them to stay open until 9:30 pm.
