Zakka Opens on Plymouth St. in Dumbo
October 2nd, 2007

Zakka, an independent retailer of books of art, photography, design, architecture, cd-roms, DVDs, and graphic design has relocated from Grand Street in SoHo to Plymouth Street in Dumbo and opened last week. It is also an artists’ space that features indie graphic t-shirts, clothing, and collectibles. Many of the items are Japanese, as the owner is from Japan. Zakka receives daily shipments from Japan and around the world to bring inspiration for creative people and design Otakus looking for something new. In the former space in SoHo, there were always many browsers looking through and purchasing books and magazines.
The store was busy this weekend from the Art Under the Bridge Festival, but that block on Plymouth Street between Pearl and Jay Street is starting to be discovered but still a ‘hidden’ gem of a retail block of independent business owners. The owner’s reason for leaving SoHo is the expired lease and a dramatic rise in rent if he wanted to stay there. Zakka signed a 10 year lease in the 2,035 sq.ft. Dumbo space.

Good luck to Zakka! I stopped by on Saturday and it was nice. The block doesn’t have a lot of pedestrian traffic but hopefully it’ll pick up.

Agreed with Rene. I was in there on Saturday and it was fantastic. I think it will be a great addition to the DUMBO retail scene.
