11th Annual Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival

Dumbo Arts Center’s Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival™ will take place this weekend from September 28 - 30, 2007 in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Over 150,000 people are expected to attend this art fest, which will feature 60 new art works scattered throughout the neighborhood while 158 private studios will be open to the public. Exhibitions will run in sixteen different venues. “The event is the single largest urban forum for experimental art in the United States that transforms the distinctive waterfront neighborhood into a multi-sensory public art arena.” Like the BKLYN Design show, this year’s theme will be green, with use of recycled materials and eco-conscious art.
Distinctively Dumbo: The One And Only, Once A Year, One Weekend Occupation Of A Neighborhood By Artists: Free, Accessible, Mood-enhancing, Sometimes Puzzling, Often Challenging, Captivating, Perplexing, Mischievous, Energizing, Can Be Funny, Never Boring, Total Immersion Visual Arts Experience, Where Art & Artists Invade Streets, Loading Docks, Lobbies, Sidewalks, Facades, River, Waterfront, Bathtubs, Elevators, Alleys, Corners, Storefronts, And Stores Plus The Video_dumbo Festival Of New Video Art, Scores Of Open Studios, And Multiple Exhibitions, All On A Curious Campus Spanning 27 Blocks Between The Manhattan And Brooklyn Bridges, From The Fulton Ferry Landing To Vinegar Hill, Known As Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York.
This is THE event of the year in Dumbo and a chance for the public to meet and see all the galleries, stores, and street art/installations in one weekend. I hear there are a few surprises planned, so I will post any information as I get them. [Update: See post on Dondi the artist elephant]

I wonder why we’re just now hearing about this weekend’s festival. Doesn’t seem like they did any promotion for it.

Dumbonyc.com should’ve posted the information about the festival earlier. But dumbo will still get a lot of foot traffic this weekend.

I am not sure why the DAC is such a mess… they can’t get their act together to publicize their biggest event of the year. All those who support the DAC feel let down by this–esp. the artists, who are the backbone of the festival. Many who I have spoken to have been writing to the DAC to put up festival information on their site for a month. It went up on MONDAY–four days before the festival.
On a side note… a painting elephant is tough competition for ANY gallery/artist!

DAC went through a major staffing change during LAST year’s festival…which served some explanation as to why they dropped the ball then.
This year? Inexcusable. Don’t redesign & relaunch your website the week of the big weekend. Dopes.
