What Happens in Vegas Film Shoot in Dumbo on 4Sept07

Many of the streets in the Dumbo area (mostly streets North of Manhattan Bridge) will be taken over on Tuesday, Sept 4 between 6am and 10pm for the filming of the movie “What Happens in Vegas“, starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. Check the street for no parking signs and don’t forget to move your car so it won’t get towed. If anyone will be around to take some photos, please email them to me for posting here.

    Since we're talking about exposure for the neighborhood, does the film actually acknowledge being in Brooklyn or does it pretend to be Manhattan like they usually do?
  • Please, each auteur must be allowed to reinterpret the skyline from the Fulton Ferry Landing. Sometimes it must be an exotic party locale alá Keeping the Faith, other times it's a ramshackle place to live as in Married to the Mob, or it's a place for Tony and Phil to connect and bond as in The Sopranos. Just as with the photographers who gain "street cred" by shooting shot after shot of the faux graffiti along Empire Stores' walls, the directors and cinematographers bring new meaning to our clearly dull and dreary lives by using, reusing, repurposing, and reinterpreting these same scenes over, and over, and over, and over, and over and over, and over again.

    I have no beef with our neighborhood being in movies once in a while, but do any of you film industry yahoos realized how many days in a typical month there is filming in Dumbo? Some parts of the year it is literally three or four days a week! Why do supposedly creative people keep coming back to the same places over and over again...there are great harbor views in Redhook and I never see them used in films. Williamsburg has a great bridge...Don't see it in literally every New York movie...spread things around

    Did you ever consider how much money we're pumping into your precious community on the days that we shoot here? We are paying business owners a lot of money for the rental use of their spaces. We are buying food from your local grocery stores and convenient stores. We are hiring off duty cops from your precint to direct traffic and keep the peace. We are having lunch in your restaurants when our catering looks gross. We are drawing international attention to your neighborhood so that your property values increase. We are bringing more tourists to the area to patronize all the same local businesses that we are. Don't you think your family visiting you from out of town a year from now will love to see spots where we filmed, that they will recognize from the movie? Give me a break with your whining! And, why are you leaving your dog shit behind? I doubt that anyone yelled at your dog because this whole crew is amazing, but pick up your dog shit no matter what day it is! And oh yeah, almost ALL of our crew are NY residents, so we're providing your neighbors with JOBS!

    thanks, VH.... how fortunate are we to be surrounded by such spectacular and unique views? it's no mystery that everyone wants to shoot here.

    maybe it's a "Car-ma" thing that the "wankers" and complainers are getting ticketed...ha! (i do have a car here - sometimes two - and received only two tickets in two years bc I forgot to move it for street cleaning. no lie.)

    re, storefront access... the publicity they'll receive will out-weigh one day of (possibly?) limited street traffic. Modern Tots is clearly visible on the Vegas fruit-throwing image - and Blueberi was featured in the Adam Sandler film that was shot here last year. Can't imagine that's bad for business.

    I'll second your sentiments, 'dumbo resident'. I love that our neighborhood is picturesque and interesting enough to be a sought after film set. I don't rely on street parking (since I can't afford the towing fees and it's seems they'll tow you over your car make around here) and I don't have a storefront that could be adversely affected by a location shoot so perhaps it's more difficult for other residents to deal with this kind of thing. Otherwise, what's the problem?

    far, far away to some lame community where no film crew would care to venture....
    the charming miss diaz presented my pooch with a pink parasol to shade him from the baking sun..... and the film crew was equally as welcoming, so don't believe the hype about the crew yelling at some dog shitting on the street. (perhaps you didn't pick up your dog shit like a proper dumbo dog-owner should?)
    honored to be living in one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the world. keep the films coming! it makes for spectacular entertainment!

    I purchased property some time ago, so I am happy with what I have have.
    I read so many comments on this site with complaints, and very few that offer constructive ideas to solve the 'problem'.
    If people want to 'cure' these issues in DUMBO its going to take more work then just calling '911' or '311'.

    I agree with 'PB'. Plus every movie shot in DUMBO will give the neighborhood more 'notice' which will help to increase your condo values, and is that not what you guys want at the end of all this?

    The film crew yelled at my dog for shitting on their street. No love for dogs in human films. I agree with PB, but I do have a horror story courtesy of Steiner Studios that occured 2 months ago. The retarded film crew decided to move my VESPA from a legal parking spot to the sidewalk entrance to Bridge Park on Main Street. Whoever lifted the bike held it from my licence plate, breaking a hinge. When I found my bike it had 4 tickets written my a N*ZI cop named Clarkson. $65.00 for a no-standing $65.00 for expired registrations (my fault) $85.00 for improper display of license plate(since someone broke it) and $85.00 for parking at an illegal place. I tried to get reimbursed, but film crews took no responsibility and claimed that someone else could have moved it even though there is a giant movie trailer sitting on the spot where my VESPA once was. I am a huge supporter of the arts, but F*** YOU STEINER STUDIOS haha!

    The film industry gives thousands of people JOBS. This is not play, it is an industry and we are lucky that NY is represented time and time again in films and will continue to be so less permits just isn't going to happen. Inconvenient for some, of course, but it's not the end of the world.

    Yes low bmi and what's your point? I'm not disrupting the entire neighborhood by living and spending money here. The number of permits issued should be restricted, an opinion I'll be sure to share with the Mayor's office.

    we all moan at the nuisance of another film/television shoot in dumbo - but how many have written to the mayor's office to ask that they restrict the number of permits issued in this area? i certainly have and suggest others do the same.

    Great. Another friggin film crew disrupting everything, claiming all the parking spots, running cables everywhere, and essentially holding the neighborhood hostage for a day. Joy.
