Final Week for Outdoor Sculpture Show, Still Flying

This week is the final week of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s (BWAC) outdoor display of sculptures and art at the Empire-Fulton Ferry and Brooklyn Bridge Parks. Still Flying, the 25th Anniversary of the show has been on display since June 30, but if you haven’t seen the sculptures, this is your last chance to view the work by 28 artists. The final day for the display is this Saturday, August 25.

Many of the artists present representation of flight, including Dragonfly by Tammy Bickel, Still Flying – Airplane, by Alex Neroulias, and Ark, a 1500 pound whaleboat salvaged from the Great Lakes in Canada by Richard Watt.

    It's really a shame that "Ark" (photo, top left) was relegated to the sidewalk on Anchorage. Would have looked stunning somewhere more prominent, even in the center of the main lawn (seriously). Its size was obviously a difficulty. Regardless, having lived here for some time and witnessing countless sculptures in Brooklyn Bridge Park (most of which were underwhelming), this collection (particularly "Ark" and the diving bird by the beach) might be the most dramatic yet. "Ark" is spectacular, worthy of the Tate Modern. It's so worth your time to see. You can see more of the artist here http://rawart2.com/

    Thank you for the comments--you're right, the siting was an issue. I wish it could stay in New York but nothing has materialized there. However, many things are materializing in Canada as a result of the show.

    Ark will be travelling up to my barn property in Ontario where it will be in the center of a large green lawn, temporarily. Next summer it goes to Alberta, where it will be given space and adequate financing, and this fall perhaps to Toronto.

    Interesting you mentioned the Tate. A Toronto critic, Peter Goddard, did a feature on the show, connecting it to a proposal I have going here for a piece under the Gardiner Expressway--the main elevated expressway downtown, near the Lake. He talked about a British artist who did a piece called ShedBoatShed and won the Turner Prize--Simon Starling--and of course showed the work at the Tate. Your opinion about Ark was confirmed in the article.
