Cheeky Dog to Open Doggy Day Care in Dumbo

August 16th, 2007

We first reported the new doggy day care in May. Cheeky Dog will be located on 149 Plymouth St. According to their website, it will open sometime in August. Their sign is up and the space is being built out. (see photos below). It will be Dumbo’s second doggy day care. Dumbo Pet Care, the other doggy day care will be opening a pet supply store soon (reportedly by Labor Day).

    God, will you people shut up about your dogs already! Jesus! You've always gotta bitch about something....i.e. drug store/post office/old timers/artists/parking/dogs yadayayadayayadayayada! How about focusing some of that attention on picking up your dogs SHIT instead for a change. You've ruined the neighborhood in soooo many more ways than one. Pompous asswipes.
  • I am the owner of the dog that allegedly was bit and I am not upset nor ever have been upset. I think there are enough dogs in DUMBO for everyone and I love how much DUMBO residents care about their dogs. Please adopt from your local shelter.

    I haven't used either place. My opinion was based on the conversation I had in the park with someone who was upset over their dog being bitten. I could be mistaken but it sure sounded like she said Cheeky.

    People should check out all available places and decide for themselves. That's what I plan to do.

    Cheeky is the most professional of all the organizations in the neighborhood and our dogs come home happy every day. Our (my wife Sara, the previous poster, and I) are the owners of the german shepherd and she has shown no signs of fear over returning and is constantly running and playing there. If she showed any fear or anxiety, we would never return with her. Any negative comment about the service or management must be posted by someone who has not used the day care or operates a competing organization. We have heard only positive remarks from people in who use the facilities.

    Also, the owner handled the situation in a professional manner. Both my wife and I have seen far worse incidents at other operations that were not handled in as professional a manner.

    Hi Sara! I just wanted to tell you that I love your dogs! My pup loves to play with them at Cheeky, especially the german shepherd. Your little one is my fave. He is just the cutest.
  • Hello, this is the dog who allegedly got bitten (it was more of a love nibble's) mom and yes we are at Cheeky. We never left Cheeky and I never would. We love it, my dogs love it, and I could not work a full time job if it not for Cheeky. I have worked in the doggy day care business and I think Cheeky is the best one I have ever seen because of the owners personal touch, large space and very clean facilities. Wishing all of you in the dog community a great day and don't forget adopt a dog :)

    Cheeky has been great so far. My dog absolutely loves it there. She gets so excited when I drop her off in the mornings! My dog has a LOT of energy so it's been wonderful coming home to a dog who is tired from playing all day.

    The dog that was bitten is back at Cheeky with her siblings, so I guess the owner was satisfied with the way things were handled. I agree, I would love to see both of these businesses do well. I have heard great things about Dumbo Petcare as well. I certainly think there are enough dogs in Dumbo to keep them both busy!

    Our pup goes to Dumbo Petcare on Jay street. We love their service! That said, I'd still like to see Cheeky succeed. I think Dumbo Petcare is great for the smaller dogs, but I'm not sure I would take a large breed dog to them for daycare. For boarding however, nothing beats the in-home, cage-free environment Dumbo Petcare offers.

    I know some places do allow toys and some don't. What I can say is that Cheeky Dog was clear that there are toys present and we were specifically asked if our dog was toy possessive before we started there. But if it does become an issue again, they might want to rethink the toy thing.

    This is the reason most daycare places don't allow bones, toys, etc. An experienced person would have known that. Hopefully noone else's dog will get hurt over there.

    Spoke with the owner of Cheeky Dog. Apparently, the dog that bit the german shepherd (over a bone) was at Cheeky for the second day and gave no warning signs that she was not friendly or that she was going to attack. The bite happened very fast and the owner was there when it happened. The dog is no longer going to Cheeky. Since we have had a great experience with Cheeky so far, I will take the owner's word for it that it was handled well (unless I hear otherwise). Rubik- Thanks again for the info.

    I think I know that german shepherd. My dog likes to play with her. Sorry to hear that she got hurt. It would have made me feel a lot better if Cheeky Dog had told us about this and I didn't find out on this blog. Thanks for the info!

    This is too bad. So far we have had a great experience with Cheeky. Our dog and our neighbor's dog seem to love it there.

    I met the dog and her owner in the park. She is a German Shepherd and the dog who bit her is a big black dog, rottie I think. She has stitches in her belly. I'd be REALLY upset if that were my dog. Either one of them really.

    Yikes. Rubik- where did you hear all of this? Do you know anything about the dog that bit the other dog? Just trying to get everything straight before I ask Cheeky Dog about it.

    You must not be aware of the fact that someone's dog was bitten over there recently. Pretty bad too, she has stitches now. Where was the owner when this happened? Or was it her kids watching the dogs? That's what I heard. Genius. My dog damn sure isn't going there. I'm trying out the other place this week and will post a review about them later.

    Wow, you are a dog owner and this is your opinion? That's sad and I feel bad for your dog. You shouldn't comment on issues you have no knowledge of. Dogs are ANIMALS they can turn in SECONDS. It doesn't matter if it's a sweet golden retriever, 'barky' Chihuahua, or an intimidating Pit Bull. The point is they are animals, and this could happen anywhere! Like.. The Dog Park! At home! Walking down the street! Do you catch my drift yet. In fact, your lack of intelligence will probably lead to your dog have temperamental issues

    We never thought we would do doggy daycare (always seemed way too luxurious for my tastes and lifestyle), but after looking into it when Cheeky opened so close to home, we discovered that it does not cost much more than our daily dog walker. And instead of a half hour walk every day, my dog will get hours of playtime with other dogs. With that in mind, I think both Dumbo Pet Care and Cheeky Dog have a good chance of building very successful businesses. There are so many dogs in Dumbo who need good care while their owners are at work all day. We just started with Cheeky (the owner seems very nice and the facilities look great). I will definitely post an update once our pup has been going there for awhile.

    I have used both Cheeky Dog and Dumbot Pet Care. They are both fabulous and serve people like myself who love having a dog but are not always there for them. Dropping off my dog at Cheeky Dog on a daily walk without having to call in advance makes my life easy, but I also love that Dumbo Pet Care will pick up and drop off my dog from doggie day care. Both are wonderful and we should consider ourselves lucky that we have not one, but two great women looking after our loved ones.

    I find it sad that there are people who, instead of supporting a new business opening, try to cause them harm from the start. Cheeky Dog is my business and I invite any of you to come by and actually talk to me instead of commenting in this forum and seeming to hope for failure. I have been very excited to join this community and get to know the residents and their dogs. As stated Dumbo Pet Care has been in business for a while, successfully. I have spoken to them and hope to be supportive of each other's businesses. We offer different kind of services. Many people have come by and shown support for my services. Again, as someone really excited about getting to know this community, I am saddened by this negative gossip.

    Dumbo Pet Care is not a "new" business. I've been taking my pup there for some time now. Cynthia's business is home-based and very hands-on. It's disappointing to me that this blog has twice profiled Dumbo Pet Care but people seemingly has no short-term memory of said posts.
  • Whatever: The point was that where there's no existing dog day care facility, and now all of a sudden two spring up during a bad new Kennel Cough epidemic, and vets and other animal professionals are warning people not to put their dogs into boarding facilites, and where existing facilities are closing repeatedly for long periods, yet still incur the normal overhead--there's a high liklihood of failure for a new retail business.

    That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I don't know how much working capital these two new businesses have to weather the storm; however, I doubt that the nabe can support two when at the exact same time there's a virulent Kennel Cough epidemic that's going to severely impact all boarding facilities--especially two new startups with little or no existing book of business.

    Your public school analogy is flawed. Public schools don't need to make a profit. Private dog boarding facilities do.

    I'm aware of the situation, I have a dog too. I meant it's highly doubtful they will go out of business, as you predict the ones in our neighborhood will. Monster Mutt may close it's door temporarily but they haven't gone out of business, so why would the ones in DUMBO? Public schools don't go out of business over an outbreak of cold/flu/lice, etc. Unfortunately viruses are part of life.
  • Actually 'whatever', Monster Mutt DID close. They closed several times due to Bordatella outbreaks and are currently closed at this writing due to the new virulent and vaccine resistant strain of Kennel Cough (though one of their recent emails from the owner says they plan to open in time for Labor Day weekend).

    Additionally this Bordatella outbreak is different than others in the past. The new strain can not be preveneted by the standard Bordatella innoculation.

    Oh please, outbreaks like this happen ALL THE TIME. Do you see Monster Mutt closed? No you don't. Both of these businesses are going to BOOM because there are a lot of dogs owned by affluent people in this hood.

    first: corporations are required by the state to furnish an address for process service. it's a biennial deal. process service has been an issue with guttman in the past due to shell corporations, assorted LLCs and officers whose names don't raise red flags. i'd like to help the AG. since we all know where this address is...shall i just post that it's the shady office on the technically west side of pearl street between plymouth & water? or not?

    third: a good AG can never be too busy. unless he is governor. then we're in trouble.

    I don't think people are more concerned about doggie daycare, it's probably more that it's a new phenomenon in a neighborhood that has existed for years and years without it, and now we've got two or three places coming in AND opening storefronts.

    RE: Guttman, what more is there to say about him at this point and what can we do about him? Even the AG's office is backing off in many of their investigations of bad developers because they are overwhelmed with claims. It's hard not to feel helpless when you're up against shady developers like this who are hurting DUMBO and surrounding neighborhoods. I'm sure we'd all welcome any suggestions you have, Local.

    Dogs have lived with humans for 15,000 years. They were here long before you graced Brooklyn with your presence. They deserve to be socialized, exercised, and treated with respec-- especially if we expect them to behave in our urban environment.

    If you step in dog crap on the sidewalk, blame the irresponsible owner who violated the law.

    Correction: Dumbo Pet Care is indeed opeing a pet supply store on Jay street, including grooming facilities and expanded daycare space. Cynthia told me herself that they hope to be open by Labor Day.

    When women stopped staying at home and people's work days expanded to leaving the house at 8 or 9 am and getting home at 8 or 9pm (or later) having a dog that didn't eventually become neurotic from being alone all day became nearly impossible. Hence doggy daycare was born. Also, urbanites don't have the luxury of putting in a doggy door and having the dog let itself out to the yard. That's why more city dwellers have cats.
