Dumbo’s First Pet Supply Store…And Kung Fu School
July 12th, 2007
When we interviewed Dumbo Pet Care (dumbopetcare.com) owner Cynthia Barnett last month, her business was already growing with the influx of residents to the area. We just learned that Dumbo Pet Care has signed a lease on a space at 25 Jay Street (in the former Dellorito’s cafe location), and will be Dumbo’s first and only full service pet food and supply store, grooming shop, and “homestyle” daycare center. They are scheduled to open in early August. The daycare and boarding will still be done in their current loft space to maintain their personalized no-cage dog/cat overnight care. There will be an opening event at the store to support the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BarcShelter.org) to hold an adoption event (tentatively on Aug 10).
Part of the space will be a Kung Fu school at night. (more to come on that when it opens).

When did dellorito’s close?

This is not DUMBO’s 1st Pet Supply Store.
The space occupied by “pomme”, a childrens clothing store at 81 Washington Street, used to be “DUMBO PETS”. I don’t think this was too many years ago.

Yes, Dumbo Pets was there for a while…how quickly we forget.
Dellorito’s, on the other hand, was there very briefly. It closed early this year.

That pet store closed 3, maybe 4 years ago. I shopped there and was sad to see it close. A lot of pet owners will be happy about this. The old store was food and supplies only, this one will have a lot of services like grooming too.
Too bad Dellorito’s closed, the food was great.

I am always amazed by how little DUMBONYC actually knows about DUMBO.

Flavia Paz, I agree, I am amazed as well at how little I know. The more I learn the less I know. I am relatively new around here (some of you have lived here for 25+ years), so I count on readers and commenters to help me learn as much as I can about the community. I never claimed to know everything about Dumbo (can anyone?), even a sliver of it. One reason I started this blog is to learn more about our community. Also, it’s obvious that Dumbo is constantly changing, so sometimes these forums help to bring context to light. I don’t do it to teach people what they should know about Dumbo.
Paz (or anyone else, old or new), if you have any aspects of Dumbo you’d like to share, I’m always open to guest posts. Thanks!

I for one offer my congrats on a successful blog that has gone from very low activity back when it started to a thriving and vital source of info and entertainment for the community that it is today. Keep up the great work.

I second that! dumbonyc you’re doing a great job. I love this blog and obviously many others do also (brownstoner, curbed, nymag… link to this site on a daily basis). This site is one of my daily must checks…
What amazes me is people who complain but don’t contribute.

Another vote of congrats to dumbonyc, along with MANY thanks. As a relative newcomer to the neighborhood, your’s is my go-to site, daily, for local info. Keep up your inmportant work.

I fourth it. I think this blog is great. Why it’s important that you know every little useless piece of detail about Dumbo I don’t know. Maybe Flavia can enlighten us. Or perhaps she has a wonderful blog we’d all like to read that is perfectly informed.

I hope that Dumbo petcare is able to maintain the same home-style care for our pets and still open up shop. It’s hard to balance both. I would hate for our beloved animals to be cheated of the care they deserve. I would hate for the owners to be taken advantaged of in terms of time and money. I would also be upset if they grew too fast without compensating for discrepancies in services they provide. If this were to occur, I know I would definitely consider a new pet care provider. With that said, I hope Dumbo Petcare is able to withstand these challenges while maintaining the quality of care that we are all thankful for. Good luck.
