Goodbye Nova Clutch Building
June 20th, 2007
If you’re in the area, you’ve noticed that the Nova Clutch building is being torn down. It’s an old building with the distinction of being the first pasta factory in the US, but there’s nothing particularly special about the architecture. Also, since it’s outside the proposed Dumbo Historic District, the owner of the building, the Walentas’ is free to do anything with the current structure. But it looks like Mr. Walentas’ Two Trees will have a tough time getting a 15-20 story building approved. A commenter who reportedly testafied against the planned tower in 2004 had this comment:
“…in order for Walentas to develop the Nova Clutch/38 Water(St Ann’s)parcel, he will have to go through the ULURP process for a variance just like in 2004. This starts with CB2, then Borough Pres, then City Planning, then City Council. I testified against his planned 17 story tower in 2004, when the pressure from a united front of neighborhood associations, including BHA, DNA, VHNA, FFLA and others ultimately turned Tony Avela and the City Council against the plan, and Walentas pulled it.”
I’m no architect or developer, but I hope whatever replaces Nova Clutch will help revitalize the Fulton Ferry area. That block on Front Street between Main and Dock Street has the potential to be the ‘gateway’ into Dumbo.
