Any Feedback from the LPC Meeting?

If anyone was able to attend today’s Landmark Preservation Commission meeting, please email us or add a comment here. (Don’t know why the LPC has to hold a public meeting while most people are working.) We all need to get the facts before speculating on what will happen:

  • What does a historic district really mean?
  • How does it impact residents?
  • How does it impact buildings that are not landmark worthy?
  • How does it impact the developers’ ability to demolish and renovate buildings?

Did the meeting address any of these questions? Was there a big turnout? Many of us would like to get all the facts.

    In order for Walentas to develop the Nova Clutch/38 Water(St Ann's)parcel, he will have to go through the ULURP process for a variance just like in 2004. This starts with CB2, then Borough Pres, then City Planning, then City Council. I testified against his planned 17 story tower in 2004. the pressure from a united front of neighborhood associations, including BHA, DNA, VHNA, FFLA and others ultimately turned Tony Avela and the City Council against the plan, and Walentas pulled it. We will need to reprise that effort to prevent him from building this new proposal.

    I was also there. The turn out was great considering the time of day. I was impressed and I don't think the LPC expected such a crowd. To continue sentiments from the previous comment... the dumbo developers are definitely working hard to not allow the designation hinder their progress. For example, the LPC mentioned that they sent notices to all dumbo residents regarding the public hearing today, but hardly anyone in attendance had received the notice. When asked exactly to whom the notices were sent, the LPC said they sent it to the Condo boards/Mgmt companies. Which probably explains why anyone living in a Walentas building knew nothing about the meeting.

    In spite of it all, I do think the meeting was a success in at least possibly getting DUMBO "calendared" in for an official review by the LPC.

    I also attended today's meeting and can confirm the previous post. The proposed building does conveniently fall in between the 2 historic districts. Who has the final say in approving these types of projects? Is it the community board or the planning commission? How heavily are these entities influenced by rich developers?

    I attended for a little while. The rumored 2 Trees residential tower is outside the proposed Dumbo historic district. It is also not a part of the Fulton Ferry historic district. When asked about developments not in character with the histoic district but located on the edges it, they said (as I understood it) that this was not within their area of authority to regulate... that this was, instead, a zoning issue. Does anyone know where to obtain this information online?
