Bubby’s in Dumbo At Risk?

Seems like there’s a lot of food news around here lately. Brooklyn Record posted six signs “things are quickly headed for the skids”. Bubby’s owner responded by acknowledging their challenges with having such a large space during the week (and scaling back some services during the week) and had a rough winter. But they’re committed to grow with Dumbo:

Bubby’s opened in Tribeca in 1990. There wasn’t a traffic light down there. We grew as the neighborhood grew. I believe that DUMBO-Bubby’s will grow as DUMBO grows, and as people know that you can have a great time, eat good home cooking, and feel comfortable bringing your kids, your grandma, your congressman, or your new bride.

Now that spring is here, Bubby’s in DUMBO is doing much better; it was a rough winter. We will continue doing our best, and I welcome any dialogue.

    New to the area, but at a glance Bubby's looks a little too 'big' - resulting in an impersonal, almost corporate/chain feel - even if it is one of a kind. The kid's play area reminds me of mcdonalds. that's enough to scare anyone aroudn here away. I'd think it would be hard to develop a dedicated clientel. I probably won't eat there.

    That being said, nothing could be worse than Toro :)

    Most people don't realize how tough it is to do business in DUMBO. That being said, mediocre food doesn't help.

    With all the talk of Dumbo restaurants failing and Department of Health code violations, I'd like to point out that Miso, the excellent Japanese restaurant at 40 Main is the recipient of a Golden Apple from the DOH for its excellence in Food Preparation Safety.

    I love Bubbys for pancakes! Although they bill themselves a pie shop the 'no baked goods in a diner' rule still applies. But their mac and cheese is awesome, it's the pancakes I go back for.
