Dumbo Improvement District Winter 2007 Newsletter

The Dumbo Improvement District (D.I.D.) recently published their Winter 2007 newsletter. Some highlights from the newsletter include information about:

  • Street Lighting: The NYC Dept of Transportation installed 5 new light poles and will add an additional 7 this spring. The D.I.D. will continue to monitor the neighborhood lighting situation.

And the Top 5 Business Owners’ Concerns

  1. Condition of street, sewers and sidewalks
  2. Lack of parking
  3. Disruptions from construction
  4. Noise
  5. Street lighting and furniture

    On thing that has not been addressed here are stray voltage issues which is always an issue in city infastructure systems. Here in the City, for example, each year a number of people (and pets)are injured from stray voltage which can electrify manhole covers and street lamps. A woman was killed after she stepped on a manhole casement which had been accidentaly electrified. There are many other cases involving injuries, some serious. In Northern cities, this is compounded with the use of salt on the streets in the winter. One clever solution to this issue is to have a real-time stray voltage warning system. Electrified Cover Safeguard technology (www.manholesafety.com), which holds the patent for real time on site stray voltage warning systems, might offer a solution to this issue.
