Dumbo BID Submits Plans to Re-route B25 Bus
February 7th, 2007
DumboNYC has found out that the Dumbo Improvement District has approached the MTA about rerouting the B25 bus that serves Dumbo and downtown Brooklyn. Currently, the B25 only turns one block into Dumbo, Front to Main to Water Street. The Water Street passageway for the bus is narrow, creating traffic and doesn’t necessarily travel the most useful route in Dumbo. The MTA agrees that although the proposed route maximizes passenger use of the bus, they do not have additional funding at this time to institute the changes. Although there have been no decisions made, the Dumbo Improvement District will be requesting a signature and petition drive in the near future. If the MTA hears enough support from the community, they are more likely to institute the changes. Email the Dumbo Improvement District Executive Director Tucker Reed (tucker@dumbonyc.org) to voice your opinions. Remember, the Dumbo Improvement District is there to hear the community’s concerns.

The proposed route would make access to the bus much better for the tenants who live off of York Street in the projects. The BID should try to include them in the petition because it would get greater attention from the MTA.

The bus now really rips into those two sharp turns onto Main and then Water, driving too fast and often swinging out over the sidewalk. I’d love to see the route changed.

In addition to being better for people living in the projects, the new route would be much better for people who commute TO dumbo to work in the various deli’s etc — most of whom come from other Brooklyn neighborhoods and the subways don’t serve particularly well.

I think the bus stop is fine where it is. Front Street traffic is already crazy at Main and Washington. It is a very narrow street, and big city busses will just be loud, noisy and polluting.
Anyway, isn’t this all being proposed because the residents at 30 Main (The Sweeney Bldg.) don’t want the big, noisy bus outside their windows. Sounds like a case of NIMBY to me.

Changing the B25 to the new route is excellent. As a B25 rider, I realized that some of the bus drivers don’t even turn down to Water Street because they feel the route is either too short or they don’t think there are riders. By extending the line, you will have many more people using the bus (including those riding the F Line subway). That connection in itself is a big bonus! This will increase public transportation ridership.
